There are quite a few pilots who are both old & bold - they merely represent a statistical minority. For the same reason, there are quite a lot of people who smoke and don't get lung cancer; increased risk is not the same is certainty. However, straight & level flight at very low level is actually pretty safe provided that you're higher than the height of your landing gear because you can get an idea of the picture from the cockpit whilst you're still safely on the ground. In this case, the first aeroplane flies by at roughly gear height - compare with the picture on its Wikipedia page. The foolish part of this video is how close he's decided to take the aeroplane to the spectators, rather than the height itself. People are unpredictable, the pilot has no real idea what his downwash and jet blast are doing, and of course showing off for the camera is tantamount to testifying for the prosecution. Given that everybody and his dog has a cameraphone these days, showing off within sight of people equates to showing off for the camera, so even if he didn't know that people would be filming, he should have guessed... In the absence of "innocent" bystanders, it gets "interesting" when people start flying lower than gear height, at high alpha, or with bank on, because there is no real scope for safe rehearsal. |

I've seen some pretty wild things during my time with 331/334 sqn RNoAF, but that's utterly insane, ground-effect or not.

Some years ago a Swedish pilot decided to impress his girlfriend and her family who where watching his takeoff at the end of the runway and did a low flyover at full blast. They were badly burned and he was as I recall kicked out.

I once visited the red arrows at scampton.. they did the manouver that that display team did, (you know the one where the italians collided and killed all of those people.. that is now banned at airshows.. champagne charlie or something i think its called) though it was very risky.. if i died it wouldn't matter because i was on base property or something like that.. spose the same applies here.. :) |

I totally agree JugDriver! It's one of those things that is funny, but only funny because no one was hurt.. if a wingtip clipped one of them then them running for their lives wouldn't be at all comical..

I wish i could find the youtube post of a ww2 RAF pilot talking about him and a few sqaud mates flying so low on a street in a town that a german solider poped out and had his head removed ... Back at the base word got out of what happend before he got there and no one believed it ..till the plane landed and they seen the wing tip dented and bloody
In the Canadian armed forces and CAA if you get caught flying under the 1,000ft / 500ft rule you will be grounded and a board of inquiry on your actions will be takin. Found guilty you could lose your job and have that black mark when applying for another. |

Hate to be a spoil sport but if you try for the limit of the envelope you will find it. Sooner or later! The pilot of this B-52 had several complains from his colleges and some even refused to fly with him. As it turned out they were right and he was wrong. And eventually very dead as that is the result when you pass the border of the envelope! |

Yeah,the accelerated stall was a consequence of their late inputs to correct the manoeuvre: the B-52 is a big bird with a lot of inertial response(throttle lag,sluggish control),which comes more evident at slower speeds. He was probably trying to do a "sling turn",where he would gain momentum from the turn dive,but he was too low/slow, and correcting that on a B-52 was impossible.. the crew probably had the time to realise what's goi g on and tell him "you killed us,r u happy now, asshole?!"..

Somehow I think it's a fake, good one but fake. I froze the video at 19 seconds and got a pretty clear image of the front fuselage. Very sharp image. I would think that with a regular video cam the image would be a smear. There's also no follow thru at all. The low flying part is cool, nice that he steers away from his buddies. He would've taken their heads off on the original course. If it's real I 'm curious what camera they used.

I think the worst problem i got into was with me and another pilot grabbed a test dummy MK bomb and painted the false markings with spray painted with "Armed" hot markings and full ribbons and were sitting on it in a hanger when the Major and his friends come around the corner ..We had a hammer in are hands banging it loud..Thinking it was the ground crew coming ...Lets just say the major was white and not impressed We both had a 1 hr chat with the squad leader and the major
