worth taking a look at this, I have an interest in KG200 as my granfather mentioned it to me when he was discussing one of his roles during WWII

I always wanted a radio controlled plane as a kid, this one I want as an adult:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KmKdA6L_MWk

bobbysocks 04-14-2010 07:42 PM

Dang! you could practically lay inside the thing and fly it. that is sweet...

Soviet Ace 04-14-2010 08:29 PM

That was pretty sweet. I'd have built a little bombay area, and had it so I could drop little plastic bombs from the plane. And I'd have had others flying some Japanese Tony's and other WW2 Japanese fighters directed to attack the B-29s. That'd be sweet to show people...

Only problem I have with RC planes, is the worry that since I'm not actually right there in the plane, or can see from the planes point of view (I'd have to attach a camera or something inside?) I'd be afraid of crashing it into the ground. I'd much rather be up there.

lol why are all the germans flying 109E's, In late 1944? I don't think so.

bobbysocks 04-14-2010 09:17 PM

caught that did you, Pope? i am not that up on that kind of stuff to catch it but that was the topic of discussion where i got the vid from...and why i put "altho as hollywood can only do..more dramatic than believeable."

SA...to wreck something like that after all the time to build it would make me sick. they guy would have had to put a chute on it like they have for ultralight AC. something malfunctions and you kill the engines and deploy the chute....if he didnt he's crazy.

Haha its kinda a habit i have. First thing I do when seeing historic recreations is look for mistakes. Its understandable when using real rare planes, films like "Battle of britain" with its late model spits and spanish Buchons as the 109s and "Top Gun" with its fake Mig F-5s. My guess is that the cgi models are stock from a previous film, maybe pearl harbor? that would explain it.

edit: curious, I had a look at Pearl Habour's cgi 109s. Theyre not the same. Pearl Harbor has Me109F's

Maybe they're supposed to be the remnants of Hungarian fighter pilots? (The Hungarian's did use E's in '41-43 on the Eastern Front, with F/Gs as well...)

Yeah I'd be pretty sick to my stomach if I or someone else wrecked that RC Plane. Lot of money down the drain with one failed flick of the controls.

And they even made up the name for the MiGs. I've never seen or read anything on a MiG-28 before. (Silly 80s Flight movies.)

Last night here in the UK Channel 4 recreated what living through the Blitz was like using eyewitnesses to recount their experiences as well as detonating bombs in similar size to the ones used by the Germans- SC50, SC500. The effects were pretty devastating as you'll see:

I don't know whether anyone else managed to see Dr Who on BBC1 on saturday. The episode was set in 'blitz' London and featured amongst other things a darlek in army green as well as 'adapted' Spitfires attacking a darlek ship in orbit around the planet!!! For those in the uk the episode can still be accessed on the BBC iPlayer. I've managed to locate a trailer link that does have a brief glimpse of the Spits attacking the darleks

From the film Men Of Yamato. The big battleship gets a pummelling. Notice when the main turret fires at the incoming aircraft. The Yamato had anti aircraft shells for its main guns. They were designed to explode in mid air with large shrapnel. This is the only ship I have heard of using this kind of round. In reality it was not very effective but you can see it being used here and in the film it takes out a couple of incoming planes:

Yeah 18 inch guns on Yamato, biggest guns ever mounted on a ship. The main guns
were so powerful that the anti aircraft turrets adjacent had to be cleared during firing otherwise the shock waves would kill the crew.

This is a scene from the movie "The Winter War", that shows the fighting side of the Finn's during '39. It's the first opening battle, and has some I-16s, and what I think is supposed to be a Po-2 but instead it's a monoplane. (You can watch the whole movie on YouTube in 19 segments.)

Nice bud! Surprised me after a quick look that so many german planes crashed or accidently just fell of the sky due to enginetrouble or other kinds of fouls during testflying. They must have been short of both skilled pilots and spareparts...

Messerschmitt Bf 109
Role: Fighter
Manufacturer: Messerschmitt
First flight: 28 May 1935
Introduced: 1937
Phased out: 1945, Luftwaffe - 1965, Spain
Status: Retired
Number produced: Around 35 000
- The aircraft is almost complete, except for a cockpit hood that was thrown off during emergency landing, "says curator Birger Larsen at the Norwegian Aviation Museum in Bodø, told NRK.
Norwegian Aviation Museum has acquired the ownership rights of the German aircraft from 2 World War II. The plane is located in the sea north of Vikna Nord-Trøndelag.

- We hope to have raised it in the next year, "says Larsen.

Divers found the plane
The plane is of type Messerschmitt Bf 109 and was a relatively common during the twin rudders 2 World War II. After the overthrow in 1943, there has been leitt for aircraft for many years.

There were divers from diving Folla who found the wreck in the summer. They had leitt for aircraft for many years. Wreck was found with a mini-submarine, and the atmosphere was great when the wreck appeared.

- It was crazy, it was completely silent for two seconds. After the crash the loose, said Hilfred Mikalsen the Folla Dykkerklubb NRK Trøndelag in summer.

Planning underway
When the plane crashed jagar, it was on its way north on reconnaissance along with two other machines. Over Rørvik had the engine problem.

- It fell, but the pilot managed to fix it before it took the water surface. He came out and was rescued by a woman who lived on an island in the vicinity, says Mikalsen.

This spring the museum starts planning the rescue operation.

- We have made a preliminary work plan for April and May next year, but early in the project have not talked to all those involved yet, "says Larsen.

little pink spitfires for you and me

got this from the m4t site..

Taken in late 44 these 16 Sq PR-IX's use a captured airfield from the Luftwaffe, note the cleverly camouflaged hanger.
These pink Spitfires were used to take low-level oblique pictures on days when there were some clouds, near sunset or sunrise, these aircraft were also used for dropping pictures and messages to field headquarters by placing them into the old 44 gallon-size drop tanks, and dropping the tank from just above the ground

never forget!

God, let us never forget those times in human history where despots and tyrants have imposed great suffering and unimaginable heartache as they attempted to impose their will upon us. And in those times men and women stood fast and hard...sometimes against overwhelming odds and met the onslaught ...denying their fears...facing uncertainty...in the hopes that "right shall prevail". Thank you, all you boy and girls, who sat in foxholes in sub zero weather, sailed the brutal seas, soared at 20,000 feet in hostile skies risking all you had so we could be a free people. And to you brave souls who made the most honorable and supreme sacrifice and left your lives there...please accept our deepest thanks. May God hold you deeply in his heart as we should. And may we never forget....ever! This weekend, where ever you are, find a veteran..shake their hand and tell them "thank you".

P-39 Airacobra recovered from Mart- Jarv lake Northern Russia

http://warrelics.eu/forum/armour-wea...rn-russia-522/

the best pics and most of the story is here but here are some other facts and tidbits

It was a journey that began christmas morning, 1943 in Wheatfield. A P-39 Airacobra, one of the 30,000 planes produced here in Western New York for the war effort, rolls from the hanger and takes off, headed west.

She was one of 10,000 planes, many from here in Western New York, that were sent to Russia. It was also a bit of WNY technology turned the tide against the Nazi's.

The P-39 was known as the "flying cannon". She was a force in the air. It was equipped with 2 machine guns in the wings, two more in the nose, a 37 mm cannon in the nose and a state of the art radio system.

But on a mission in 1944, this plane disappeared

Fast forward 60 years to July 2004. A fisherman on Lake Mart-Yavr in arctic Russia spotted something under the water.

A British warbird recovery team was called in and what they found was absolutely astounding.

The plane was recovered intact. The pilots remains, and medals were still in the cockpit, so was the plane's logbook.

That history has come full circle. Representatives of The Ira G. Ross Aerospace Museum went to Great Britain and bought the plane. The head conservationist at the Imperial War Museum in Britian told them this is a tremendous acquisition. Not only what was found, but also where it would be going. It is now being rehabbed in the very building in which it was built, the former Bell Aviation plant.

It is also a treasure-trove of tributes to the plane's history and the people who made it. An even more significant find came after one of the former Rosie the Riviters called up and said "do you know we used to write our names and addresses on parts of the planes?"

Sure enough, clear as a bell, they found the names Helen Rose on one piece, and Elenor Barbaritano on another. They were written in pencil, preserved like they were written this morning.

..............
After more than 60 years, historians found this place and lifted the aircraft from the lake (surprisingly enough, but the aircraft was well preserved). They buried the pilot and even found canned pork.

Bletchly Park

From Yahoo News

More than a million Second World War documents are to be made available to the public for the first time.
Files from Bletchley Park, the UK's wartime code-breaking headquarters, are to be digitised and put online in a large-scale project expected to take up to five years to complete.

Undercover mathematicians and military operatives produced high-level intelligence at the Milton Keynes base during the war, providing crucial assistance to the Allied effort.

The work of the Bletchley Park staff, which included cracking supposedly unbreakable German codes generated by the Enigma and Lorenz machines, has been credited with curtailing the length of the war by up to two years.

The Bletchley archive currently exists entirely in paper format and much of it is difficult to view, making it inaccessible to the general public. Until now, only limited access to the archive has been granted to academics and educators under strict supervision.

Following an initial digitisation phase lasting around a year the documents, including communication transcripts, memoranda and photographs, will be made available for access using a combination of paid-for and free content.

The project is the result of a collaboration between Hewlett Packard (HP) and the Bletchley Park Trust, which runs Bletchley Park's National Codes Centre and its museum and educational facilities.

Simon Greenish, director of Bletchley Park Trust, said: "This will help preserve and considerably increase access to the historic fragile materials, as well as enable researchers to see and study documents from the code-breaking work that took place during World War Two. There can be few archives which contain material that had such a profound impact on the world at the time and which is still relevant today."

Norman Richardson, vice president and general manager of HP Imaging and Printing Group UK, said: "The Bletchley Park archive contains hundreds of thousands of documents tracing some of the most significant historical milestones of the 20th century, including some of the events that defined the outcome of World War Two.

"Our collaboration with Bletchley Park will not only ensure the preservation of this hugely significant archive but will also allow it to be made accessible and searchable digitally for the first time, untapping the value of this content for the benefit of audiences all over the world. We are hugely proud to be working with Bletchley Park and its team of volunteers to make this exciting project a reality."

McQ59 06-10-2010 08:31 AM

Yeah... It's close to a shame. That bird was handled like a plane, while it should be handled like a fragile new-born baby. I just hope the men in charge can fix it up and put it in a safe place for the public to see what a beautifull bird the 109 is.
