Some good flying there Kakashi! Are you part of a virtual areobatics team?

In sims one of the hardest things I have in terms of formation flying (in most of the sims I have flown) is judging seperation and changes in relative speeds. (for the saftey of all I tend to keep my distance ;) )

How do you think COD stack up against other sims you have used in this respect?

Yo. I am not in an aerobatic team right now, but I was back in the days in il 2 sturmovik and followed the whole serie.. I was co-founder of the European Virtual Aerobatic Team, me (Flagada) and my buddy Pegazus are IRL friends so we were just catching up here we made a test flight today :P.. we're likely gonna keep it casual really. so this was my first time formation flying in cliffs of Dover.

Last time I flew formation was years ago so I did real good was surprised, I did train a lot on su 26 lately, will probably come up with an Extreme Flagada 3 soon enough xD!!

mmmm in terms of judging seperation and relative movement I'd say it's very good, just like the IL2 serie really. Just like real life too. That's what I love about these sims, and the hitbox is really the hit box xD none of that flight simulator BS so that's good to train I'd say.

Really right now I think CoD is the best for virtual formation IN THE AIR... and not too fast cause the Su 26 on the ground is a hot mess :( .... and at high speed.... at high speed ?!?!?! what is that really !??! you guys ever tried ?

But yeah as long as you keep it in flight not too fast i feel there's plenty to do!

PS: I forgot the most important draw back from this game is the sun... In real life I got polarized ray ban's.... the sun doesn't blind me as much as this... it's OD anyway to turn that off ????

Glad that you like it!
This is version 1.0.0.13820 and yes, the shading on airplanes looked so beautiful here (without any imposed weathering).
The self-shadowing is just breathtaking...
I also noticed that the Spitfire gunsight illumination used a different effect. I don't really know how realistic it is compared to the one that we have in the last official update, but it does look nice, doesn't it?

http://img811.imageshack.us/img811/4407/17153484.png

It's a shame that they didn't really make 100% 3d cockpits, but this is still amazing.

And I mean, look at those shadows! ARGH! What have they done!

It's a shame that they didn't really make 100% 3d cockpits, but this is still amazing.

And I mean, look at those shadows! ARGH! What have they done!

Ah ok. I have the same version. It does look really good. That downsamling you got there is a rather interesting animal.:) So basically your game runs at higher resolution and then is being showed on the monitor at your native one. That way you eliminate the jagged edges without the need for antialiase. Interesting.:)
What kind of performance hit do you get from that?

Yep. The very first release version would crash upon start up. Anyways, this was rendered at 2560x1440, and downsampled to my monitor's resolution of 1920x1080. The screenshot was then downsampled again so aliased edges received a double treatment there; while in-game, on the final official patch I use a post-process antialiasing injector, it's not so greatly effective but it gets the job done. I've tried the same injector on the 1.0.0 etc. version without success, but I have to say that the built-in antialiasing does seem to work a little, although it misses smaller meshes here and there...

It is!
I wish someone could figure out a way to get that shadow map resolution back!

Although I have to agree with MB_Avro_UK, the light haze looks so good and the atmospheric lighting is great, it really gives the feeling of aerial perspective... that's from one of the latest patches, right? Nice screenshots, by the way!

As for the downsampling technique it simply consists in allowing your game to run at a resolution that is higher than the highest resolution supported by your monitor, and then to shrink the picture back (downsampling) into your monitor's actual resolution. This kind of allows a lot more pixels to fill the same space, making details look sharper and helping to reduce the jaggyness around edges.
Depending on your hardware, Ati or Nvidia, there are different but very simple ways to achieve that, if you're interested...

To reply to both, my system isn't "beefy" at all, I'm running both versions on an HD 6950 with six (not of any cool brand or speed) gigs of RAM on a second-hand Q9550 that I've recently purchased. Resolution is set to 2560x1440 downsampled to 1920x1080, settings are at their highest value, with in-game anti-aliasing set at 2x I get a smooth gameplay, averaging 30 FPS. This is for the final official, the earlier version does have the infamous stutters at ground level but I can happily live with those! Everything is playable smoothly enough for me, when up in the air...
Performance hit is variable, around 10-15 FPS.

I see thanks...but the game has 3 possibilities, highest being 1920x1080 my monitor's highest setting is the same and is the native.

I know, a higher resolution would appear to be available only after a driver-level passage that needs to be done, which differs from Ati/AMD to Nvidia cards. I'm using an AMD here, which needs an external utility (all details here: http://forums.guru3d.com/showthread.php?t=366244); I don't know about Nvidia, but I think it should be possible to achive through the Forceware (if that's still their name, I'm outdated there) control panel.

Nacy, those are some cool shots. is that the patched up unofficial version being worked on? Looks great.

All it needs is the original lighting engine and some effects from the early versions and we'll have a game to last us ten years.:-P

To make the game work at higher resolution than my monitor could do, I used this little tutorial:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tLPBOvrA1xQ

I had it running at 2560x1440. The videocard is not very happy. It started showing some artifacts. :???:
Those last ones are all messed up. I had the FXAA off.:???:
