One of the potential problems is for online players, especially where scenario play is involved. If many aircraft are added at extra cost some guys may not want or be able to afford them. Of course it will depend on how much they cost.
You don't need to buy all the aircraft unless you intend to fly them. Most people never fly "all the aircraft" in any game. Even with the limited aircraft in CloD there are aircraft I have not even bothered to sit in - I simply have no interest in those aircraft.

In RoF there are certain aircraft that will cover just about any scenario - many times aircraft go on sale for 50% off - $2.99 for an aircraft is cheap. Its only expensive for those who "have to have every plane, weapon, and pilot mod" - even then it can still end up being cheaper then buying a full game and follow up expansion given the bulk rebates and sales.

With with WW2 there are a lot more aircraft options but even then if they focus on releasing aircraft and maps based on specific battles then people can just buy those things they want.

I think you're wrong, most Sim fanatics will buy any flight sim that interests them. I doubt CLOD will stop BOS sales unless BOS is backward step. I expect simers will play CLOD until BOS is released but that won't be until early 14 .. that means nothing for `13 .. that's a big hole. Why not allow gamers access to CLOD to fix it. Sounds like BOS might be far more stable and usable on PC tablets where CLOD will only be useable on high end desktops.

Given the current situation - we can see how very well that worked. ;)

True, you made a point here.
I would consider it as a threat though.

I wont pay for it. Guarantee it. It's already a huge step back.

But what if you are on a fixed income? What if you only have an Obama phone which is free and you can't afford $2.99?

I don't have a classy rule to follow. If you don't agree feel free to report me to the ATAG group. I don't lose my consumer status.

On line gaming is a hobby and hobbies are expensive. If you can't afford $2.99 then you probably should spend your free time looking to increase your income rather then playing games.
