I agree. It's important to remember that for every success in aviation there are a hundred or more "failures". Those of us who have tried to make a living in the biz will certainly testify to that LoL

Good one Danny. From what I've read on the Me-309, some versions even had a pressurized cockpit for high altitude intercepts, very unusual for a single engined fighter. Problem was that all that extra stuff made it too heavy and performance suffered. Here's a diagram showing how the nose gear would lay flat up under that big engine:

flynlion 12-06-2009 12:15 AM

So if anyone is still interested, the homebuilt I posted back on pg 30 is a "Mini-Imp" designed by Molt Taylor back in the 70's. It has a VW engine that sits just behind the cockpit and drives a tail mounted pusher prop through a drive shaft. I want one heheheh.

Araqiel 12-06-2009 01:30 AM

As I got the Victor here's another:

Avro Shackleton :D

Vulcan607 12-06-2009 12:32 PM

big bucket oh win

Araqiel 12-06-2009 01:25 PM

The Ho-229 was designed by the Horten brothers, but were it to enter production it would have been designated Go-229 owing to the fact that Horten didn't have any manufacturing plants of their own. The pic I posted isn't the 229 though; think bigger.

You were right the first time :D

it is a phantom in the background. If you look at the pic again theirs actually 3 planes in the pic. The fuselage you can see is not the phantoms, but the plane infront of it. So all you can actually see of the phantom is indeed the tail fin :D

the main plane in the pic is.... i've no idea! foriegn. The plane behind it..again i've no idea. But the plane furthest back is indeed a phantom and not folded wings :)

it belongs to the luftwaffe also (the phantom).

Thats the funniest paintjob on a plane I have ever seen. They even painted little paws on the fuel pods/weapon pods.

Not sure of its merit as camoflage, cant be operational colours

Wissam24 12-13-2009 11:55 PM

They should make a plane with Leonidas kicking the Persian messenger on it. Then use it on the front lines. (No political comment intended, it's just an awesome bit regardless of nationality of the participants)

Panzergranate 12-15-2009 05:06 PM

The large partial picture is of a Northrop P-61 "Black Widdow" night fighter.

The bi-plane has a Fokker D-V tail, Armstrong-Wittworth Siskin wings and a propellor that looks like its from a Hawker Fury.

The undercarriage also looks the same as on a Siskin too.

I'm think that its a Dutch Fokker D-VII, D-VIII or D-IX maybe??

Ok, so after searching and searching through french planes. I couldn't really find anything that matched. BUT then, before you had even said anything about Spain. I forgot, I had over looked the tail, which had a sort of WW2 Nieuport 28-esque tail to it (at least to me). SO, I searched and searched through my book on Spanish Civil War planes, and came up with this!!!

NIEUPORT-DELAGE NiD 52 :D

(Also, just for fun. I want one of these Nieuports. THEY SEEM SOOO COOL!!!! I'm now even MORE interested in Republican fighters of the SCW)

This was a prototype jet chaser in 1944 and saw some service during the late 1940's, after the war had finished.

Powered by the Rolls-Royce Griffon engine.

Top speed was 492 MPH in level flight.

This is the world's second fastest ever piston engined aircraft, the Martin-Baker MB-5 being quicker at 520 MPH.

There was also a jet powered version.
