Yeah me too... however I enjoy studying those planes! :)
|
Evening all.
Just got BoP and I'm still getting used to it after many years of merged FB/PF enjoyment on the PC. I have a question and a comment: I assume the Saitek Aviator joystick and the other one (which I'd never heard of until today!) are the ONLY joysticks that will work on an Xbox? Plugged in my old Logitech Extreme 3D Pro PC stick, but nothing seemed to happen. Should the Xbox automatically recognise a suitable USB joystick in preference to the wireless gamepad? I need to sort this ASAP as I find flying using the gamepad just...aarrrrgh...Throttle and rudder on the same button; blimey. Secondly, for discussion, am I right to think the environment in BoP is a taste of what we should expect in BoB Storm of War if it ever appears? It's an improvement FB for sure, but I'm really a bit disappointed. Rather like another contributor to this thread, I flew east from Dover, looking for Dungeness, the Romney Marsh and Rye where I live, and found no accurate detail at all. With smaller battlefields like BoB, you navigate as much with landmarks as with map and compass. That's certainly what happened in 1940. Given the years of discussion on Oleg Maddox Il2 forum about this subject, losing that detail seems a shame. But is it that important to anyone who doesn't live in Kent or Volgagrad? However, it's great to see that the sim community is as lively on the xbox version as it has been on the PC. Lets hope there's a way for all this activity to feed into patches and add-ons :). |
Quote:
As for your second statement I agree with you, a map of such a small area should be more accurate for many reasons including the one you mention.I would tend to believe or trust that Oleg and team would give us a more detailed map as they have in the past. F_3 |

In BOP bombing a runway only ends up setting most of the runway on fire, and the wreckage all stays in the middle of the fires. So there's no craters, but there should be. |
I would like to see a split screen mp mode me and my friend wanted to dogfigth each other here in my house and we couldnt cuz the mp is online only so hopefully next il-2 game will have it......

It is a growing tactic, once a side has captured an airfield, to bomb around any obstacles and hazards, on the airfield, so as they are obsucured by smoke and fire. This increases the chances of an enemy, attempting a landing, crashing into something thus foiling the capture attempt.
Buildings, watchtowers, shelters, haystacks, tents, etc. are all good targets. Plastering the runway so that it is just a mess of smoke and fire does freak out the majortity of players enough to either screw up or not even try a landing. Those able to use "The Force" or just plain crazy, will still try anyway. On two field games it is wise to leave a bomber behind to bomb the captured airfield whilst everyone else roars off to attack the other airfield. |
Quote:
It's stupid for bombs to be allowed in CA - they should be patched out. Nobody bombs a runway they intend to land on in a few minutes. But as long as people use bombs, you can always park your plane in the fire where it can't be seen. The builders of Stalingrad City and Gumrak airfields tailor-made them hostile to capture, no need to bomb them when they're full of haystacks, various other invisible pointy objects, and little piles of rocks running down the center of the runway that will crash your plane if the wheels hit them. Air travel would be a lot more exciting if all runways had such great obstacles. |
Since so many people who get IL-2 run into problems with Hornet's Nest, here is a video. It's a webcam capture, with a bit of flicker and a few freezes, but it shows you exactly what to do to get all the planes without having to respawn and risk running out of time. The fighters will most likely get you before you can bomb the ground targets, but just use a couple extra attempts for that, you won't run out of time with that objective.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wPmeYe2aqso The music is good Soviet war music which any IL-2 pilot would have playing on their cockpit stereo. |
sugestion
I suggest that Il2-sturmovik should add more planes. And make the ability to create squadrons.

Hi All,
I'm new to this game and the forum. Loving it so far, should've bought it sooner. Anyway, I was wondering if anyone here could comment on the ThrustMaster T.Flight HOTAS X For PC/PS3 flight stick. I want a stick controller now that I've finally been able to fire this baby up. Any suggestions are greatly appreciated. I did refer to the flight stick threads but unless I missed something it appears that there is no particular mention of the stick I have mentioned. |

Oh right. I guess I thought you could literally check 6 as if you were using out-plane view in arcade mode. I guess that wouldn't be very sim-ish though would it?
It appears as though I'll be learning things about this game for some time to come. In the meantime though I better get stuck back into it!!! |
I've been checking out some of those screen shot pics and they're awesome. Props to all.
Tell me though, how do I screen grab on PS3? |

EDIT: Flight stick ordered hooray!!! |
trim is the y button; the big dials on the left (throttle) control do nothint

Trim is the A button is it not?
|
New to the forum, so excuse me if this the wrong place to ask. (I did search first.)
What are the concensus "hardest missions" on Simulator? I'm working on the campaign on Simulator difficulty (on the Xbox 360) and am curious to know which missions are considered to be the toughest. I'm now breezing through most missions, now that I've gotten the trim down, learned to avoid spins, and figured out how to eyeball ground targets. I had considerable trouble on Hornet's Nest, but finally got past it this week. Any other fussy missions I should be aware of? EDIT: Never mind, the answer is a resounding "no". I breezed past the rest of the missions and finished Simulator difficulty today. |
using flaps on ps3?
Can anyone tell me if there is a way to toggle flaps in "realistic mode" on the PS3? I don't have a flightstick, just the regular ps3 control pad. I know I can toggle them in "Simulator mode" but the default control layout is slightly different between sim & realistic modes. I've tried making a custom layout but that doesn't seem to work. I thought perhaps I just couldn't use flaps on realistic mode but I saw a npc plane using them while playing a training mission offline. Thanks!
Oh, I use the default ps3 controller layout. I tried to make a custom layout that was the same except using the square button for flaps instead of zoom but it gave me all sorts of problems when I tried to play that way (such as elevator able to pitch down but not up...?). |

If you read the info in the encyclopedia on the difficulty modes you will see that arcade and realistic planes were ment to have automatic flaps. But in fact there is no automatic flaps, you have to make do without. This means some planes (especialy the Mustangs) perform far worse in a turn in realistic than in sim. |
Ah, thanks for the help. That is frustrating that the NPC planes can use them though... I don't suppose a patch is on the way at this point.
Realistic mode is my favorite way to play & I was really hoping I could use the flaps. Ah well. |
Here are a few early unlocked easy going planes for Realistic and Sim.
Fighters: Yak-3 (Decent turn radius, field of view, and firepower) Hurricane (Excellent firepower, can carry a bomb, decent speed) Bf109 series (Fair planes all around) Bombers: IL-4 (Outstanding turn, 4 250kg bombs, fastest firing guns in game perhaps) A20G (almost considered by myself a Heavy Assault Fighter, but a bomber still) He-111 H-6 (Unlocks 32 50kg bombs early, excellent in CTA) And some advice, don't fly a American/British/Italian plane over Berlin, Stalingrad, etc. Or a IL-2 over Britain. It doesn't go right, and many players will refuse to play if this is the case. Its just wrong to see such things. |

i dont know of any 51s getting there before aug 44. BUT i didnt dig into other 51 FGs. keep your eye on zenos warbird drive-in. he plays a various amount of film and vids from ww2. he might show operation titanic footage one month.
|
your probably running out of fuel if you have ammo and fuel limited
|
A tip sombody gave me was to raise your flaps after you touch down. i was having the same problems with the spitfire and the 109s never had a succesfull landing with neither till i tried this the p51 is one of the easier planes to land
|
Of course there was the Belgian air force, which may have flown over Berlin. There was the lend-lease program, but the planes don't have Soviet markings. I'm simply saying, it makes me feel odd seeing a Hurricane over Stalingrad, with the year set to 1940.

But that is historical fact whereas this is a game. The quintessential word being Game. |
If you have armaments missing for your IL2/M/10 and they're unlocked by destroying Strike targets you can land near them, get up close to them and let it rip with your cannons. The recoil on them will push you back to easily move to the next.
It will work with any aircraft with a cannon. EDIT: After getting hate mail on PSN after i did this, i want to know if this is regarded as 'dishonorable, cheap'? |
I would say 'knock u'rself out mate'. Get the unlocks anywhich way u can. Landing and shooting up concretebunkers with your cannons, is as honourable as it can get in my view!
I unlocked quite a few bombs&stuff by simply crashing my plane into the target Kamikazestyle. |
I got my first unlock for the IL2 by crashing into stuff. Do it on arcade, 300 tickets, 3 minutes. In arcade, there is no such thing as honor since everyone is just 1 out of some 1700. In Simulator, everything is much more personal.
If you keep getting hate mail, use the grief report function. |
if you can make a good landing and shoot the crap out of a bunker more power to you. i dont know why you would get hate mail...you yourself now are a sitting target like on CTA. if they cant put you out of action they have a problem.
|
Quote:
Must be those missing German rockets |
I've landed a Po-2 next to a bunker once and shot it with the tailgunner. Takes a whole 2 minutes to get one point down. The Po-2 in itself is a CTA aircraft for arcade. Take it to a 1vs1 on CTA, you can average 20 kills with 5 deaths. Somewhat the same for the I-16 Type 24 and the I-153. With either aircraft, its very easy to get a easy landing.

Earlier today I met an arcade player trying to unlock the bombs for the Fw-190 F8. I told him he had to play dogfight or team battle but now I myself am starting to wonder, it seems to be more of a strike plane.

Simple question
I`m very rooky at this game.
I'm stuck in Stalingrado. Although I destroy every JU52 the mission is never acomplished. The final message says that some aircrafts landed. Thanks |
Can be a nerv&mindwrecker that one... Use your wingmen to do the dirtywork. I haven't got the time to look it up now, but that mission has got it's own thread I think.

Oh really oh I forgot your Jesues Christ who has grown tired of winning of every game on realistic I have played every mission in this game as well BLOW Hard . And it is well known that this mission is flawed in arcade being that the AI triggers for mission conditions do not activate correctly. It maybe possible to complete this mission on arcade but it is much easier to do it on realistic or Sim. Now go find a compressor some were and hook up I think your head leakes when you open your mouth and you are down a few PSI in that ego of yours
|
Oh Joe did I offend you cause I did a mission you couldn't lol since you want to talk sh*t remember the last game you played with me the dog fight that turned 2v1 then after I killed your asses about 10 times you got all pissy and dove strait into the deck after ever spawn then I killed you anyway so you got all butt hurt and quit the game lol not my fault you suck and you do suck Joe
|
Naw that not it all never played you but once long time ago . Just that you are allways saying Im so good look Im bored wah wah . I dont care just tired of your bullshit bragging. As for me not beeing able to finnish a Mission go get bent asshole Ive finnished this game 100 times over so kid go pump air up your ass like i said your ego seems to be down few pounds.
Still dont change the fact this mission has flawed AI triggers . which was my point of trying to help the person who was asking question . You offer of help is im so good I beat it what your problem like I said air head go stare at your self in the mirror some more and wack off seems self love is what your into |
Hey guys, are u sure u wanna do this in public?

mav sorry man but what do you seriously expect? you come in like Mohammad ali spouting off "i'm the greatest" and you cant understand the flak directed at you? honestly? you may not have intended to come off that way but you do. people play this game for different reasons and some people struggle in particular areas. when you tout "i dont know what your problem is i blew threw all of these and didnt break a sweat" you are rub their nose in it. is that really what you wish to do? you may be the greatest virtual pilot to ever hold a controller but there is more to gamesmanship like humility, graciousness, and compassion.
|
I undersand the flak it's fine with me I just want to play the guys anyone can say anything they want but I think they should at least try and back it up anyone that wants to I'll play I am fully prepared to back up my claims I like a good il2 fight so bring it on lets play some games yeah I get a tempersome times it gets pretty annoying when most every game I play ends with host has quit the game then they want to talk crap so talk you know how to find me. I'll try to stop being a jackass in future posts lol but no promises

It's a great community. trust me, it is something you want to be a part of and not animate yourself from. enjoy your time here and enjoy the friends you make here. you will find they are the ones worth keeping. i have been on other forums and found the people there for the most part total dickheads. cannot get out of Stalingrad
Help, I am stuck at the last Stalingrad mission where you have to stop the air supply bridge. no matter how many transports I shoot down I still fail. I've shot down 20 and I still get the message "the transports have reached Potemkin you have failed". any suggestons to what I am missing or doing wrong? thanks.
|
Use your wingman , try and postion your self close to thier airstrip.
Try it on Realistic or Sim as some missions are much more difficult in Arcade do to game script trigger issues |
does the air strip show up on the radar? or do you just fly around looking for it?
Thanks! |
welcome, there are probably a couple threads about this mission...do a search and you will find all kinds of suggestions.
|
Thanks, there sure are a lot of posts on this mission, I don't feel so bad anymore. I will try the tactics this weekend and hopefully I can move on. Cheers.
|
Don't want to start a flamewar, but I completed that mission without any game script problems. Doesn't mean I didn't crash a few times! I think it's just down to luck really.
By the way, does anyone else's game crash when they try to view the planes in the hangar? I'm kinda annoyed at not being able to read up on the planes (plane geek here...). |
Quote:
I've read somewhere that if you are using a Tflight hotas x in the hanger it crashes could that be your problem? |
Guess I am not jesus Joe plenty of others have done it on arcade too lol

But.. The greatest tip I can offer which I hope will now show up in searches is you can use mouse as free look camera with flight stick just plug in usb mouse before starting game and to pan camera left click right click zoom:!: If you are using a HDTV 720P or greater display and have trouble picking up or spotting targets try changing the resolution to ED-TV 480p Big shout out to "Caper" Stic for his head tracking rig |

Ok,bought the game pc version loaded it up all ok downloaded the relevant updates, but get an error message every time just before the play starts,'Acess Exe has stopped working'.

I'm having some troubles. I haven't played this game for very long, but I need to know how to unlock all the planes. I've completed the Campaign, done all the single missions, and done training in all the planes I have. The only thing I haven't done is the "Simulator" tutorial. (Which is amazingly unrealistic, by the way.)

TV Settings
I play BOP on my 42" Panasonic, 1080p, HD, Plasma TV, now my problem is that when I play BOP on SIM, Realistic or even Arcade with the HUD turned off, I cannot see the planes until I am right on top of them, its like they just appear out of thin air.
What is the optimal tv setting for BOP? |
thats just part of the game, BoP's HD settings arent the greatest, and along with a very fuzzy cockpit view and its generally difficult to locate another plane.
|
Birds of Prey: Not Realistic
So I have been playing this game for a while and I do like it, however I find myself getting p***ed and turning it off frequently. This is because the planes in this game stall TOO EASY. Now I'm sure you guys are going to call me a noob and say that it takes more practice, but I have the X52 flight stick with rudder pedals and I have adjusted the sensitivity and everything that there is to adjust and it is still too stall happy.
Now I don't know if anyone here is an actual pilot but I am. I have all of my ratings which includes Multi-engine, IFR, Commercial, with both a complex and high performance endorsement. I have been flying for a while now and I do have experience in high performance aircraft and I can tell you from experience that aircraft like these do not stall this easy. I'm not going to give you a lesson on aerodynamics but I can tell you that the physics in this game are severely flawed. Have you ever seen a Red Bull Air race where one of those pilots stalled their aircraft? Probably not, because it rarely happens, and the airplanes those guys are flying are much more unstable than a P-51. I really hope that the creators of this game take a look at cliffs of dover or 1946 and revamp their flight models. I don't know who they talked to that made them make the aircraft in this way, but they need to talk to people in the industry. I'd really like to hear what you all think... |
Have you adjusted the elevators and alirons on the planes you can make it to where the planes are pretty much impossible to stall the trick is getting a good bsllence between not stalling and still being maneuverable and secondly it's a game not real life I have got my setings to where I pretty much never stall unless shot up of corse
|
Well, I don't know about stalling but I do always feel like landing is probably a heck of a lot easier in real life than it is in these games.
|
Tried it...

I mainly play realistic but I play sim too and I just never had the problem you are talking about I just use a regular controller though so don't have any experience with a flight stick
|
no undpilot87 you arent going to get the real flight feeling from this game. for anyone who has sat in behind the stick/yoke it will be quite different and a major let down. it is a game, and you have to approach if from that perspective. if you try to fly these ac from the frame of mind of how real ac react, etc you will simply not do very well. but that being said this game is a lot of fun. first off set your sensitivities to about 1/2 for most ac ( that is what i had to do to get the feel for the game...then start to move them up towards full). the 109s are the most stable, so fly the G6 to start and play with the others from there. the 51s are bricks, some of the spits stall like you said way too easy. the game is flawed. if you are playing ps3 then you have 2 different controls to adjust with xbox only 1. dont get discouraged though. actually this is the best non PC air combat game that you can get right now on console. hook up with some of the boys who play the system you do and learn to fly all over again. and you are best off trying real or sim ( there you have flap (10%ish) controls) difficulties. arcade will simply just really frustrate and totally piss you off.. if you are on xbox let me know and we will set up a time and fly around together until you get your gamewings. cool. the only thing with the sensitivities low is the ac is slower to react. so when you get into online dogfights it is a disadvantage. you wont turn or roll as crisp as the guy on your 6 or the one whose 6 you are on. i flew that way for a long time just to ge the feel for things. then i started to slide them towards full a notch or 2 at a time. if you are dissapointed with the way the spit handles you are really going to be upset when you fly the 51s and 190s...haha
