Found this today: taken from yahoo news
The Royal Air Force has got a new target in its sights - a hit album in the charts.

The RAF central band, founded 90 years ago, has signed a recording deal for a special album marking the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.

The collection, called Reach For The Skies, will feature some of Winston Churchill's most famous WWII speeches, supported by wartime music played by the marching band.

Members of the band signed a record contract on the wing of a Spitfire fighter plane at the RAF Museum in London.

Mark Wilkinson from record label Decca, said he wanted to find the right band to mark the anniversary.

"This is a really important year for the air force, a really important year for the country.

"We wanted to commemorate that in words and music.

"It made an awful lot of sense to go to the very top, to go to the very best, the central band of the Royal Air Force."

Making records is nothing new for this band - in the 1930s they were the first military band to record an LP.

But for those in the current line-up, this new experience has been one to remember.

Senior Aircraftman Neil Chapman, who plays bass drum in

the marching band, says making the record was "really exciting" and an experience he enjoyed.

"I've never worked in a professional music studio before and to be behind the mics playing and also to be in the studio listening back to the recordings, it was really quite an event."

And while other newly signed bands start wanting first class fights and free champagne, Neil says his bandmates aren't that greedy.

He says they're happy with "as much tea and coffee as can be drunk" and "a few bacon sandwiches".

:: Reach For The Skies is out on 27th September

I have seen that one Bobby. It's not that great to be honest. There is some nice aerial action but the ground based stuff is pretty hackneyed. Also **spoiler alert***

Also at the end it shows him taking off on his last mission then cuts to his funeral. I read somewhere they ran out of cash. It's really bad because his death is iconic, taken down by a lucky Lewis gunner shot of all things. The best parts of the film are right there on YouTube.

On the spur of the moment I joined my local aviation society on Saturday. The main reason being that as well as a small museum at the airport in carlise, the society owns amongst other things a lightning, a phantom and the puppies croutons that is a Vulcan. So if you're ever up this way and fancy climbing all over this beast, drop me a line and I'll happily arrange a guided tour with the guy that used to fly this Vulcan. For info, this was the Vulcan that did the falklands run back in 82 to show the argies we could still 'deliver' to them from the UK.

Spitfire on BBC4 radio about an hour long program...starts with talk radio for the first couple of minutes.

A moving drama by Mike Walker about the most famous British fighter aircraft in history, marking the 70th anniversary of the Battle of Britain. Framed by recollections from veteran Geoffrey Wellum, the play features specially made recordings of RAF Battle of Britain Memorial Flight Spitfires, including the only Spitfire still flying today to have fought in the Battle.

Inspired by real people and real events, the play traces RJ Mitchell's design from creation to legend and the fortunes of two young pilots who join a frontline Spitfire squadron just as the Battle of Britain begins. It stars Samuel West, Samuel Barnett, Rory Kinnear and Ruth Wilson.

Many factors were important in the Battle, but it was the excellence of the Spitfire which most famously evened the odds in the fight against the Luftwaffe. Mike Walker's play takes us close to this magnificent aircraft and gives us a feeling of what it was like to fly the legendary plane which became, in test pilot Jeffrey Quill's words, 'a symbol of defiance and victory'.

now this will be interesting if they do it with the sofistication of "avatar" and dont gum it up to much with drama...

Warner Bros. Pictures is developing a World War II film, Deadline Hollywood reports. According to the site, the studio has bought "The Battle of Midway", a pitch from Bruce C. McKenna who previously wrote the script for some episodes of HBO's "The Pacific".

Moreover, it is said that Warner Bros. has put the upcoming project on a fast track as McKenna is expected to turn in a script within eight weeks. The movie is rumored to carry a price tag of around $200 million and will be made in 3-D, with Akiva Goldsman serving as producer.

The upcoming epic film will focus on the turning point of the June 4-6, 1942 event and take place six months after the demoralizing surprise attack on Pearl Harbor. "When it was over, the supremacy of the Imperial Japanese Navy was lost along with 4 of its aircraft carriers and 1 heavy cruiser. The Japanese never recovered," Deadline further describes.

The Battle of Midway has been turned into films for several times. In 1942, John Ford directed Oscar-winning "The Battle of Midway" using actual battle footage shot by the Navy. Later in 1976, there was "Midway" starring Charlton Heston, Henry Fonda, James Coburn and Hal Holbrook.

Found after 69 years ... fragments of Spitfire collision over Edinburgh.

IT WAS a tragic accident at the height of the Second World War which was witnessed by hundreds and left a girl haunted by the memory.
In what is thought to have been the only mid-air aircraft crash in central Edinburgh during the conflict, two Spitfires collided over Inverleith, Edinburgh in September 1941.

Now, fragments from one of the fighters have been unearthed in the Royal Botanic Garden after remaining buried for 69 years, The Scotsman has learned. And an eye witness, who was 11 at the time, has spoken of her vivid memories of seeing the plane crash just yards from where she was camping.

The aircraft had been on a training flight from RAF Drem in East Lothian when the collision occurred.

One of the planes, flown by Pilot Officer K M Simpson, crashed into playing fields west of Inverleith Park after he successfully bailed out.

But the other Spitfire crashed into the Botanic Garden and its pilot, Pilot Officer Arthur Searle, 20, from Rhodesia, died after he bailed out too late. He is buried in Dirleton cemetery in East Lothian.
While much of the wreckage was removed from the scene after the crash, some parts remained buried in the ground until they were unearthed in this summer's excavation, organised by Leigh Morris, head of education at the Botanics.

They include parts of the engine and cockpit, found 10ft below what was then the curator's private garden.

Mr Morris said: "We found fragments of the aluminium airframe, and the engine's carburetter plate, the stainless steel cockpit catch, and pieces of the Perspex cockpit cover. The aircraft exploded into lots of pieces and the big bits were taken away after the crash."

The excavation site, about 70ft long by 35ft wide, is close to the garden's east gate on Inverleith Row, where a temporary shop had been located.

Pauline Scott, who was 11 at the time, was left haunted by witnessing Searle's Spitfire crashing just 20 yards from her home in Inverleith Row.

Mrs Scott, now 80, said she had been reading with a friend in a tent in the garden when she heard "unusual sounds" from some low-flying planes.

She said: "I peered out of the flaps of the tent and was horrified to see this shape hurtling down towards me. "Visions of newsreel footage and planes exploding when they hit the ground flashed through my mind, and terrified, I attempted to get out of the back of the tent, which was well pegged down.

"Somehow I escaped and made my way, legs like water, to the safety, I hoped, of the house.

"I thought we were going to be obliterated - it was like a nightmare.
The plane thankfully hit the ground on the other side of the high stone wall at the top of the garden.

"The droning sound of that falling aeroplane haunted my memory for many years, especially when listening to night-flying aircraft."

A special garden may be created at the Dumfries and Galloway Aviation Museum in Dumfries, which excavated the wreckage, to mark the incident when the fragments are moved there after being displayed at the Botanics.

an couple amusing joke about ww1.

if WW1 was a bar fight

Germany, Austria and Italy are standing together in the middle of a pub when Serbia bumps into Austria and spills Austria’s pint.

Austria demands Serbia buy it a complete new suit because there are splashes on its trouser leg.

Germany expresses its support for Austria’s point of view.

Britain recommends that everyone calm down a bit.

Serbia points out that it can’t afford a whole suit, but offers to pay for the cleaning of Austria’s trousers.

Russia and Serbia look at Austria.

Austria asks Serbia who it’s looking at.

Russia suggests that Austria should leave its little brother alone.

Austria inquires as to whose army will assist Russia in compelling it to do so.

Germany appeals to Britain that France has been looking at it, and that this is sufficiently out of order that Britain should not intervene.

Britain replies that France can look at who it wants to, that Britain is looking at Germany too, and what is Germany going to do about it?

Germany tells Russia to stop looking at Austria, or Germany will render Russia incapable of such action.

Britain and France ask Germany whether it’s looking at Belgium.

Turkey and Germany go off into a corner and whisper. When they come back, Turkey makes a show of not looking at anyone.

Germany rolls up its sleeves, looks at France, and punches Belgium.

France and Britain punch Germany. Austria punches Russia. Germany punches Britain and France with one hand and Russia with the other.

Russia throws a punch at Germany, but misses and nearly falls over. Japan calls over from the other side of the room that it’s on Britain’s side, but stays there. Italy surprises everyone by punching Austria.

Australia punches Turkey, and gets punched back. There are no hard feelings because Britain made Australia do it.

France gets thrown through a plate glass window, but gets back up and carries on fighting. Russia gets thrown through another one, gets knocked out, suffers brain damage, and wakes up with a complete personality change.

Italy throws a punch at Austria and misses, but Austria falls over anyway. Italy raises both fists in the air and runs round the room chanting.

America waits till Germany is about to fall over from sustained punching from Britain and France, then walks over and smashes it with a barstool, then pretends it won the fight all by itself.

By now all the chairs are broken and the big mirror over the bar is shattered. Britain, France and America agree that Germany threw the first punch, so the whole thing is Germany’s fault . While Germany is still unconscious, they go through its pockets, steal its wallet, and buy drinks for all their friends.

Ace Combat isn't any good. After all their previous games, I don't expect any of their newer ones to be good.

bobbysocks 10-25-2010 02:01 AM

"supposedly" this is part of an air force test. its kinda interesting and fun as well....also challenging and frustrating...lol.

Personally, i love the series. I've played almost all of them excluding the first two, the 360's game, one on a phone and the newest one on PSP.

It's always been my favorite flight combat game.

The Unsung War wasn't any good. Too easy, just lock on with missles and fire.

The same can be said for the entire series.

here's something you dont see everyday...its a hungarian fighter called a marton. you can see a lot of messerschmitt in it...here's a little info:

"In 1943 the Marton XV-01 was developed as a heavy fighter. The twin-boomed tricycle gear design was designed to use two DB 605 engines, one tractor and one pusher. It was to be armed with a 30mm engine-mounted cannon, two heavy machine guns in the cowling, and additional cannons in the wing roots and boom leading edges. This would make for a very heavy hitting aircraft. The aircraft was to have an ejection seat, designed on a twin rail system powered by a spring. In 1944, the fuselage and wing structure were completed, but they were destroyed in an Allied bombing raid in April 1944."

one real pic,,,one artist rendering,,,and a model of one

Korsakov829 10-26-2010 07:58 PM

The Hungarian air force had Bf109-E3s as their main fighter from what I understand, so I wouldn't be surprised if they took a few apart. It doesn't even look like it can fly as absurd as it is.

bobbysocks 10-26-2010 09:57 PM

there's some good relics there. watch out for unexpended ordnance...could ruin your day. there's a chic over there Filatova Elena Vladimirovna who has dug up some of this stuff around different battlefields. her site is: http://www.elenafilatova.com/ dont know if she is still messing with this or not. it would be interesting to poke around some of those places and see what you could come up with. hell a walk in the woods could net you a fw or a yak!

Korsakov829 10-27-2010 03:02 AM

I came across some old battlefield ambience in Poland, about 18 years ago. A German officer cap I believe. You never know what you might find on the old front lines, or in the English channel.

Korsakov829 10-30-2010 01:54 AM

My favorite film set in the WWII era is Ballad of a Soldier. Excellent quality.

bobbysocks 10-30-2010 07:05 AM

ww2 was all overt the tv when i was i kid in the 60s. "combat" with vic morrow...garrison's guerrillas....the best airwar series was 12 o'clock high. but as MP said always look on the bright side of life....and war....military comedies were my amongst my favorites. topping the list was "no time for sargents" I highly recommend this if you want a good laugh. its about an american southern country bumpkin that gets drafted....and tries to fit into "this man's army"...

Andy Griffith is pretty good. But after he was colorized, it wasn't the same.

everything you ever wanted to know about a bf 110. here's photos of one being disassembled..

Korsakov829 10-31-2010 07:07 PM

Good find!

The Bf-110 is classed as a Heavy Assault Fighter, and is ok in Sim games. It seems to fit more of a recon role though.

bobbysocks 11-01-2010 05:29 PM

looks interesting of you can find it. wings of defeat....about the jap kamakazies. was on PBS in the us...

I put my hat on my head when flying. Of course, its a helmet, but still headgear.

bobbysocks 11-02-2010 03:38 PM

on the history channel 11/10/10 9pm est

WWII in HD: The Air War
The untold story of the American 8th Air Force's bloody battle to defeat the German Luftwaffe in the months leading up to D-Day. Told through the gripping, first person accounts of three American airmen and Stars & Stripes reporter Andy Rooney, this special showcases breathtaking aerial combat--original, color footage, never before seen by most Americans--of the B-17s Flying Fortresses, P-47 Thunderbolts and P-51 Mustangs on missions such as Regensburg, Schweinfurt and Berlin. Never-before-seen 8mm footage of the airmen on the bases, the devastation in Germany, and the Luftwaffe perspective is also highlighted. Flying 25,000 feet above the earth in oxygen-devoid air, and temperatures as low as 50 below zero, the 8th Air Force fought a war unlike anything ever before experienced. By the end, they would suffer more than 26,000 combat deaths--more than the US Marines lost in all of World War II. Narrated by Emmy nominated actor, Rob Lowe.

I assume you have never heard of the great Thai baker Kittiwat Unarrom? Truely, a talented person.

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_zLVJerNm_L...PartBread1.jpg

If you haven't figured it out yet, he sculpts bread into body parts.

bobbysocks 11-06-2010 12:31 AM

Korsakov829 11-06-2010 12:35 AM

Hah. Trust me its bread.

I plan to make a special visit to Thailand next year. I have a thing for bread.

I hope a moderator doesn't ban me from the forums, it looks so realistic.
