Apparently you do this, no idea if it works with CoD though:
Installing from Disc instead of Steam

Question
I try to install my retail game from the included disc(s), but the game begins downloading through Steam instead. What can be done?

Answer
Mac Users:
If you are using a Mac, you will not be able to install from the disc. Please double-click on the game in your Library list to begin downloading and installing the software.

Using Steam launch options to install retail games from disc
  • Log in to Steam and click on Library.
  • Right-click on the game, select Delete local content, and confirm.
  • Insert the first disc into your computer.
  • Close Steam (Steam > Exit).
  • Press Windows Key + R to open Run
  • In the Run window type: "C:\Program Files\Steam\Steam.exe" -install E:

Replace E: with the CD/DVD drive you are installing from if is not correct. Replace C:\Program Files\Steam if your Steam installation is not in the default location. Press OK. Steam will launch and ask you to sign in if you do not have your password saved. Your installation should continue from the disc.

Steam always brings the version up to the latest official patch in one go.

So, if you download from Steam you'll have 1.05.something.

If you install from the disk and disable Steam updates you'll have 1.0.something, which you cannot upgrade incrementally: turning on updates will bring you up to 1.05.something, as if you were downloading from Steam.

The only way to have the ability to go back to a specific version is to keep backups of each one. Steam does have such a feature. Before applying any update you can backup your current version. I had all versions backed up on my HD, from EU release to the latest one, but disk space was running low and i deleted them.

Guys, I have the CD from the collector's edition. All the disc does is install steam, and then the game downloads via steam. So even with the disc, you'll still receive the last official retail release, i.e. v1.05.

But Slipball, what reason do you have for wanting the initial release?

Hi Dutch...I just wanted to try it again in its original form because I liked some of the visuals. However my memories do fade, so I could really be off track with this.

Anyone going the Version 1 route, make sure you back up your settings somewhere, just in case it does something screwey!

il_corleone 09-10-2012 04:58 PM

ok just instaled from disk, and disabled automatic updates, but the game updates to the 1.05 automaticatly, when you press play it says X mins to play the game, and starts to download the 1.05, i just put the 1.08 patch, and i dont know if i am i or something, but its more smoother lol

I tried many ways to do this for the same reasons you mentioned. Much more natural lighting, better visuals.
I even contacted steam about it. It won't work. Steam won't let you play until you download the update.

I managed to restore one of the old backups I had. I keep playing with it from time to time. It's a pain to go back and forth between versions all the time, but with the Steam folder and the backup, being on SSDs it works pretty fast.

This are some shots taken with that instal (most likely messed up by the upload messy conversion):
