as far as the conex goes done a online test ...........

just done an online conx test - the wife watches all her soaps on her netbook at this time of night also

done 4 as im always think these online things a shady lol

1st one - http://www.speedtest.net/
download - 2.45Mbps upload - 550kbps ping - 30ms

2nd - http://www.broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk/
download - 3.88Mbps upload -497Kbps < similar to what the PS conex test is getting

3rd - http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/diagnostics < very fancy lol

download - 3.80Mbps streaming speed 1?? - 221kbps streaming speed 2 - 294Kpbs

4th - http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/ and with corrie finished lol

download - 3.98Mbps upload 606Kbps ping 60ms

im no wizz but i know with the soaps on or youtube its killing the band width, and ive no idea if the above is good or other wise as said the first 3 are with some streaming of soaps and/or youtube

The scariest part replacing the thermal paste will probably be separating the heat sinks from the chips.

As for the speed test, it seems kinda low, assuming your report is in bps rather than Bps. Are you on cable or DSL and what type of plan are you signed up for? ( 5Mbs?, 10Mbs?) Do you find your connection is slower at peak hours?

StiC

edit: Ignore my speed test remarks after some conversions I realized I used to play at 500Kbs upload no problem except for voice.

Scotty, What speed are you on with Virgin Media? I think something is not right. The lowest sevice they do now is 10megabit. So you should be getting close to 10mbps download and 1mbps upload. I'm on Virgin Media's old 20mb service and I'll show you my speeds from your links.

1st one - http://www.speedtest.net/
download - 19.66Mbps upload - 1.72mbps ping - 5ms

2nd - http://www.broadbandspeedchecker.co.uk/
download - 19640 Kbps upload -1466 Kbps

3rd - http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/diagnostics
download - 19707kbps streaming speed 1?? - 10697kbps streaming speed 2 - 19599Kpbs

4th - http://www.speedtest.bbmax.co.uk/
download - 19669kbps upload 1845Kbps ping 25ms

So even if you are only on the 10mb service you should be getting half of my speeds. You are not even getting a quarter speed.

How old is your Modem? If its an old silver NTL one, It might not be able to manage the speed you should be getting.

Guys, uber thanks for the responses, Pope i will find out as im not sure but i do know there is no fibe3r optic service in the area where i live so im assuming its 5Mbps................ but will find out for sure.

going to try the secret menu thing tonight :) ............ dont think i willbother with the thermal paste thing :/ sounds not for the amature amature pc/laptop/ps3 repair person :p lollol

whoarmongar 08-13-2011 09:34 PM

Do you do a lot of downloading ?

I know of a case where someone suddenly had bad conection speeds, after lotsa calls to his ISP it turned out he was being "Throttled" because his usage was adjudged to have been excessive

Ahh Sorry, I completly forgot about Virgin Media's ADSL service which is completly different. Had a look for you and its up to 20mb speed, but unlike cable you are unlikely to see those kind of speeds due to all kinds of things. So your speeds might actually be quite good for that service, I don't know.

scottyvt4 08-14-2011 01:48 PM

No bother pope ... in fact i should have said it was an ASDL service

Done the secret menue thing and re-built the database ........... althought it did make my system run faster ........ it still froze 3x, so im leaning more to its a heat problem more than anything i will keep it well venbted and on its side till i ge the fans that shadow linked me ........ lol watch this space!!!!

whoarmongar - its an unlimited package but ours is more specific to actual downloads but im sure its been throttled back as the Download speed was a consistant 4 now its 3.8 .......... not much but a reduction non the less.

scottyvt4 08-21-2011 11:50 AM

Omg since Friday, playing IL2 my system froze 3x and that was just flicking between menu's, on Sat night, got into a few games no probs at all, then when the game was loading kicked out to the home PS menu.......... 2x in a row so shadow set up a dogfight, no probs at all near full lobby same thing again.

Last night was the same got in a few games (router outage 2x) after that fine then all of a sudden kicked to the main menu .................... seriously frustrating.

Now i dont know if its the net conx with a full/fullish lobby or my system. the games last night where is wa kicked out completely to the PS home menu it was under different hosts, shadow then ratman!!??!!??!!
