The fog was beautiful, a testament to Oleg's keen eye for such things. You almost get a queasy stomach, like those men must have had, as they approached their aircraft in the early morning.

RAF Petrol Fires

Hi all,

The Spitfire and Hurricane both had petrol tanks in front of the cockpit. The Me 109 had a petrol tank behind the pilot's seat.

Many of the RAF fighter pilots during the Battle of Britain suffered terrible face and hand burns from this petrol tank.

I do like the idea of dioramas, but this one makes me curious: how did the pilot get there? what's he doing there? He's on the wrong side of his plane, the cockpit isn't open that side, and the propeller is turning, which makes it dangerous to walk past it.

I am trying not to be negative, it just seems an odd situation to me, the pilot on the other side of the plane would be obvious, but on this side, I wonder why he's there. I think it was usual for the RAF to enter their planes from the left side of the plane, but with the way the cockpit of the '109 opened, the Luftwaffe had almost no choice, they had to climb in from the left.

Very nice screenshots, all of them. Lots of art there.

Kastel 01-23-2014 06:12 PM

Nice as always. especially the first two.
Unfortunately the first one "tells" a war story which doesn't seem believable

larry69 01-23-2014 06:59 PM

Thank you Guys, AVRO UK, Major Setback, Kastel!

A mixture of "Gone with the Wind, Piece of Cake, Pearl Hearbor etc etc ..". (PoC is not Hollywood, i know).

Oh Larry69 would that we could only fly one of these brutes for real...of course I'd probably quickly find myself in the drink at the end of the day like so many torpedo missions flown with various aircraft in Il-2 & its many extensions...sigh....
