You don't have to be in a squad to register at the USL. Many of the squads are looking for mercenaries to help their rosters.

The pay may be weak, but the combat experience is invaluable!

The pay's no better in a squad, but you do get the pleasure of feeling like you're the same as a bunch of people that distinguish themselves from bunches of other people despite the fact their all the same, though very different on an individual basis... Remember to rig up some absorbant material on your joystick and don't play if you need to sleep within two hours after a match. It would make good sense to take an aspirin before a match, and put the "hotline" on speedial. Cats and dogs can be trained to speedial in the event of no more events.

Are there actual rules? All I found was a thread about proposed rules, but they weren't laid out well at all, unfortunately. I wanted to read about how matches are flown, how a team wins a match, etc.

60 minutes rounds, 2 rounds per match with a 15 minute break per round? That is an awfully long time!

Anyway, please direct me to the final rules set. My squad is discussing the possibility, but would like to see the rules first.

Default The Rules

The rules, to some degree, are forged by the squad Liaisons, based upon the draft rules implemented by the Board. The standard rules, the schedules, match points, and match lengths have been the same for years, and are widely accepted by all the participants. These are not just dogfights, these are strategic battles involving every aspect of the simulator, from flying cap to bombing, to reconnaissance. Based on historical battles, to win requires a practiced team effort. Each team gets an opportunity to fly as allied, then axis to complete a match. The emersive nature of the battles requires 60 minutes per round to accomplish a competitive score in closed pit. 45 minutes per round in open pit. While some squads refrain from competing due to a rule discrepancy, we currently have 31 competition teams registered with an eastern and western division in both open and closed pit genre's. We currently operate three USL game servers and a registered USL TeamSpeak.

This is an opportunity for your squad to do something other than fly in a pub server. This is an opportunity to bring your squad together as a formidable competition team and win a title that will not only bring your squad global recognition, but double or triple your popularity in recruiting, and gain your squad the respect of the flight sim community.
I would suggest posting your concerns at the USL forum, and being a part of the rule making process on behalf of your squad. You really don't want to miss this....

To be honest Laz, that's a nice slick recuiting response, but it doesn't answer my concern. Call me slow, but you say "These are not just dogfights, these are strategic battles involving every aspect of the simulator, from flying cap to bombing, to reconnaissance. Based on historical battles..." but the draft rules shell does not explain that in the slightest. I've looked for some explanation or overview of the league and how it's organized and conducted and have found nothing. If I've missed it, please point me to where to find it.

I think for now JG27 will skip this round. Maybe we'll look into the next one if we can figure that all out.

Actually, it's not a nice slick anything. I'm sorry you feel that way and I'm sorry your squad will be absent this season. The rules aren't finalized because the squads have direct input until the season begins. This is why we call them the "Draft Rules", this is why we call it "The United Squadrons League".

I hope you will give your folks the opportunity to compete in the seasons to come. I hope you decide to help change what you feel would better the competition by actually being there to add your input. That kind of interaction is important and key to the future of what we do.

Maybe you or a representative of your squad should sit on the Board of Directors. There are two seats left and I can't imagine a better way to insure that your satisfied with the direction. Your concerns are valid, but without your input, we miss opportunity to improve.

If this is of interest to you, lets talk on the USL TeamSpeak. I would be happy to fill in any gaps regarding structure, match play, or any other questions you are not getting answered on the forum. If that goes well, I would extend an invite to the next board meeting, where the final rule draft will be the topic.

What say you?

Be careful what you ask for. You may not know, I ran Ghost Skies, which was a ladder Dog Fight competition, for a couple years. I'm basically a rules lawyer after that, looking to close every loophope and flaw. So, when I don't even see a starting point for rules, it just makes me thing of the nightmare ahead.

But my reason is asking is that in order to sell your league to my squadron, I'd have to have something to sell. Right now USL sounds like it's under construction, but we'd have to get in with just the foundation laid.

In order to fly your league we'd have to re-arrange, and possibly reduce, our commitments with other activities. Right now I've got nothing to convince them to do that. As far as personally committing to helping develop your rules, I don't have the spare time.

So, maybe once the rules get hashed out, you can post them, and we can go from there. But if your league has been around for years, why aren't the rules set? I can understand necessary adjustments, but having nothing but that draft? Did you scrap the old set and are starting fresh?
