OT: Maybe you can help with internet/router problem

I recently joined Talktalk in the UK, and recieved my username/PW. I haven't recieved my router from them yet, so decided to connect via an old Belkin Wireless G Router Modem. The firmware is up to date, and I have entered everything correctly as found on many forums (now inactive) and help sites. The bloody thing just will not connect to the internet! The phone line is working (the phone symbol on the router is solid) but that internet light will not come on. The strange thing is, on the router homepage, it says connected for a split second, and gives the down/up speeds, but then it says not connected. Any ideas what's going on? Is the router just crap? Or could this be an isp issue?
