Default unit selection save crash

After I set the "order of battle" for the first mission (German in my case) I go to save the layout and the game just closes, it just goes straight to the desktop no error report or anything, it just clean closes the game.

I have no idea what’s wrong and any input would be greatly appreciated. I have eliminated the possibility of it being my hard ware but i am still using 32-bit vista and i know that causes issues. I have also increased memory allocation and followed the guide to minimise crashes but it still happens.

=scach that it always crashs on save=

You're talking about the ToW1, right? What's its version (it is shown at the right bottom corner in main menu)?
Anyway, it looks like the game can't save any data because of Vista access denial. Try to run the game using the 'Run as Administrator' context menu option.
