Useable Trade Goods

Which of the trade goods are useable apart from food to feed your troops? Does armor/weapons do anything? Do horses do anything?

I have read the manual but i'm still am not understanding a few concepts.

Each horse add 2 to your army cargo capacity. AFAIK all others (except food) are just for trade.
