Using Evil Beholders effectively

So I just managed to get some of these from the frog castle. I'm trying to figure out their Mind Control/Charm thing.

Do you just select the troop you want, and attack something next to it? I seem to lose control after 1 action, regardless if it's move or attack. Is that working as intended, or am I missing something basic again?

You select an enemy troop with this ability, then an enemy target of your choice in the initiative range of the hypnotized unit and it will perform the attack right next the action.
