Default Am I supposed to 'grind'?

I noticed opposition is frequently insanely hard in this game.
Am I supposed to vulture down on weak bands of bandits over and over until i can expand my forces?

Also any advice on purchases? So far I've added a cavalry unit, 2 units of infantry and 2 crossbowmen units to my force and upgraded them.
Horse archers are poving to be somewhat frustrating.

Yes the enemy lords are very powerful especially in the start of the game.

Keep atacking bandits, peasants and merchants (they pay you first, then you can fight them and sell the trophies) until you get to higher levels.

As for the purchases you have a restricted number and type of troops.
The more experience you get, more and better troops you can recruit.

The base of your army will be the irregulars.

I am at level 15 and i have 10 irregulars(swordsmen and archers)
5 militias(sword and crossbowmen),3 mounted sergeants and 1 unit of dismounted knights.

Retarded as I am i had not seen the troop limits at the bottom of the army roster. Interesting.
I went shopping and added some infantry and archers to my roster. And upgraded a unit into irregular cavalry. I'm hoping to evolve into a somewhat cavalry heavy force.

No, i think you can't have many knights or sergeants.

Of course it depends on the experience you gain but then again the number of knights and sergeants is limited.

You can upgrade not only the type but also the number of men in the unit,
the primary/secondary weapon, morale and initiative of the unit.

So you can have a unit of irregular swordsmen with the abilities of sergeants for example.

I'm Level 23 for now. I can have 3 knights and 5 sergeants. Not very much, no. =/ But I hope it will increase by 1 for each at next level

Nice! That's a good amount of knights/sergeants.

Do you have the more than 20 units mod of mitra?
And can you tell me the other units in your army and how many?
I'm asking just by curiosity.

I have the 1.4 mod (by Mitra) (It doesn't affect the number of units on the battlefield though, but I can tell you - it's really good!)

However, since I largely disbanded some troops, I do now have 4 pikes (militia class), 3 knights, 5 sergeants, 2 Siege weapons (I disbanded all old given by quests, though, unfortunately I can now only field 2 siege weapons and I don't understand why there's such a low maximum number). Moreover, I have 2 archers militia class, and 3 Crossbows.. Plus some militia cav and so. The cap for militia at level 23 is 9. Though you can much more irregulars (If not mistaking, I think it was 1.
So basically it's 3-5-9-18 on the different caps (Lowest number for knights, highest for irregulars).

Not ahistorical of course though I had hoped you could eventually further upgrade all your forces at least to the level of 'regulars'.

Btw in the campaign will there be battles with 'allies'?

Also in time will there be a bit more diplomacy and castlemanagement (beyond Thorn)
