Where are the health bars?

In my first game, in each battle units displayed their initiative order and the health of the top soldier in helpful little bars below each unit. In my current game, they are not there. Is there some optional button I can push to bring them back? (My first game was at Normal, the current one at Hard, but since the information is always available by clicking on units, I hope this isn't a difference between levels. It does slow battles down.)
