Items not marked on map

I've played KB:AP and items you could pick up were always marked by starts on the minimap. I've also finished both mini campaigns and it has been the same. Now I'm playing OotM and I no longer get stars on the minimap - I can see enemies etc. but no items. This is the first time I play on hard and I'm wondering is this supposed to be a feature of the higher difficulty or is this a bug?
