getting through the hatch

Hi i have just bought the game and installed it. However no matter what I try I can not get through the door. I have installed the patch, but it apparently makes no difference. I have read a couple of threads regarding this issue, but I'm not technically minded and I need some help on a very basic level. please somebody can you assist me.
