I just think that it looks like they used a very high gloss plastic and shrink wrapped the aircraft in it.

Why would you need this effect?

What am I missing here? (Honest question).

You need to hack the game to do that and extract the DDS layers for the default skin. Such effects are not possible with the simple Jpeg skins we have now. There would also be the disadvantage that the effect would be applied to every 109 or Stuka etc. Oleg once said the ability to do polished metal was there, but it would need a drastic rethink of the way skins are stored and read in game for it to be practical.

Ah thanks for clearing that up, I was under the impression they were changing the effects.

I could have sworn we had something like this in a beta patch though.

Like this...

Will find a better shot.

Found some more..

Hope they bring the shine back at some point.

Its bumping up the specular map, I believe. Someone here did something similar ages ago.

I think the skin system need a major rework as well. The idea of having overlays that put details like rivets and markings like no step and refueling port on a plane is great... except not every plane had those markings.

Ideally the skin system should allow custom overlay and specular/normal dds textures to be stuck in a subfolder of the aircrafts skin folder. Then any skiin placed in that subfolder would load with the override markings, wear, ect textures in that same folder.

You could easily release skins with custom sets of wear and dds textures that wouldn't rely on the games defaults - just drop the folder in and load it in-game.

Or people could make "shiny" specular maps like seen above. Then just drop any skin you want to use with that custom specular into the subfolder.

I hope my explanation is clear enough. As of right now its the easiest way I can see them fixing the situation of skins without breaking everything thats been made up until now.

WoW. Thats such a new technology....

I was experimenting with this skin in Targetware six seven years ago.

Actually they are doing it wrong. you have to put that layer under the paint, like it was in Targetware. You then do some chips in the skin and the shiny metal becomes visible. You don't put shiny metal effect on top of the paint. The game i think has this effect done, but since the last patch all the lighting was messed up and the metal reflections are pretty much gone.
