get items from boat?

I'm in my first boat (the fast boat), cruising around the first island and there are some red bottles and chests in the water but I can't figure out how to pick up anything. What amazingly obvious thing am I missing here? Thanks!

You know how you click the mouse on the screen to move your ship? Just click on the item and your ship will move to it and pick it up. You'll know you've clicked correctly if your mouse pointer turns into a hand.

And not all flotsam can be collected, for example the red bottles or debris of ships. What can be collected is marked with a small yellow icon on the minimap or can be identified as collectable if the cursor-icon changes into a grabbing hand.
