Unit: 85 Squadriglia, 18 Gruppo, Corpo Aero Italiano (CAI) Serial: 85-7 Maldegem, Belgium, November, 1940. Unit: 85 Squadriglia, 18 Gruppo, 56 Stormo C.T. Serial: 85-9 Ursel AB, Belgium, Autumn 1940. Unit: 95 Squadriglia, 18 Gruppo, 56 Stormo Caccia Assalto, Corpo Aereo Italiano Serial: 95-9 Пилот - соттотененте Франко Бордони-Бислери. Лето 1940 г. Unit: 95 Squadriglia, 18 Gruppo, 56 Stormo Caccia Assalto, Corpo Aereo Italiano Serial: 95-13 Maldegen, Belgium, 1940. Unit: RAE (ex 95 Squadriglia Caccia Terrestre, 18 Gruppo, 56 Stormo) Serial: BT474 (ex 95-13) This single-seat biplane fighter of the Regia Aeronautica was the only one of the Italian aircraft shot down in the Battle of Britain to be repaired and made airworthy for test purposes. Coded '95-13', it belonged to the 95 Squadriglia Caccia Terrestre (of the 18 Gruppo, 56 Stormo), the Squadriglia being indicated by the '95' in the code of the aircraft. This unit was attached to the Corpo Aereo Italiano (Italian Air Corps) which was the overall title of the Regia Aeronautica units, under the command of the Luftwaffe's Luftflotte 2, which took part in the Battle of Britain. It was based at Maldegen in Belgium and was shot down by RAF Hurricanes from Martlesham Heath on 11th November 1940, force -landing near Orfordness with a fractured oil-pipe but otherwise undamaged. It was taken by road to Martlesham Heath and then, on 27th November, to Farnborough. The CR.42 was subsequently allotted the RAF serial BT474. Only limited flights were made at RAE by S/Ldr L.D. Wilson before it was flown to the AFDU at Duxford by W/Cdr I.R.Campbell-Orde on 28th April 1941, to enable that unit to develop tactics against the type, which was the standard Italian fighter in use in the Middle East theatre, by mock combat with various types of fighter in service with the RAF. During 1943 the AFDU lost interest in the type because of its obsolescence and the aircraft was selected as potential museum material. In 1979 the CR.42 was transferred to Hendon |

FIAT G50
Unit: 20 Gruppo, CAI Serial: 20 (MM5372) Belgium, November 1940. This Fiat G.50 (MM5372) is a typical example of three-tone camouflage applied on the upper and lateral surfaces of the Fiat G.50. The bird was flown by magg.Mario Bonzano, CO of 20 Gruppo of the Italian Air Corps in Belgium, over the Channel in Winter 1940/1941. The basic colour was Giallo Mimetico 3 (FS 33434) which was mottled with Verde Mimetico 3 (FS 34102) and Marrone Mimetico 1 (FS 30118}. The undersides were Grigio Mimetico (FS 36293). Heavy weathering in the cockpit area was caused by a protective tarpaulin, which held moisture in places where it wax in contact with the fuselage. It was moisture, unusually low temperatures (compared to Italian climate) and mechanic abrasion which accounted for damage of the paint in exposed areas. Bonzano's mount wore black discs on main undercarriage covers. Although the 20 Gruppo saw the largest deployment in Belgium of all Italian units, it did not achieve any victories. Later, the Gruppo operated in Africa, where Bonzano scored two victories. From 1938 to 1939 Bonzano fought in Spain. Unit: 351 Squadriglia, 20 Gruppo, 56 Stormo C.T., Corpo Aeronautico Italiano, Regia Aeronautica Serial: 351-2 Ursel, Belgium, late 1940. Unit: 260 Sqn, RAF Serial: unknown This aircraft was captured by South African Forces in Libya. It is seen in the colours of No 260 Squadron RAF based in Palestine during 1942. |
