The fog was beautiful, a testament to Oleg's keen eye for such things. You almost get a queasy stomach, like those men must have had, as they approached their aircraft in the early morning.

Default RAF Petrol Fires

Hi all,

The Spitfire and Hurricane both had petrol tanks in front of the cockpit. The Me 109 had a petrol tank behind the pilot's seat.

Many of the RAF fighter pilots during the Battle of Britain suffered terrible face and hand burns from this petrol tank.
