Different Paths to Ending (Spoilers)

I finished the game last night and after seeing the ending I noticed it was slightly different to one described in the gamefaq walkthrough. This describes the engineer reading the telegram and giving the captain a model of the ship.
You perform this when you see the engineer sitting on the table in room at the end.

I didn't see any of this with my ending. I took part in the scene were they both break on to bridge and seize the controls from the captain.

Are there different things that need to be done to see each ending?

The ending depends on which finger of Kronos you choose, there are three different endings with engineer, head of security and captain's assistant.

I forgot to mention, that these are three different ways to reach ending, the ending itself is same for all variants
