I would like to know the opinions of the seasoned skin artists here.
I was looking more closely into the rivets of the 109 and as they are currently set they seem to be only on one side of a panel line. Shouldn't they rather be on both sides as the kept the panels inplace? |

if its realistic it possibley points to the construction of the panels. possibly the panels are layered to reduce weight and just use minimum amount of rivetts ?
Great question though ! edit, found this image which supports the single lines of rivetts. the rear sections covering could be thicker, maybe have tongue & groove system etc. i say its realistic given same is seen on this image. http://i72.photobucket.com/albums/i1...AS-detail2.jpg Last edited by Ali Fish; 06-04-2011 at 01:34 PM. |

They would then have to be overlapping, the panel edges I mean. And then how to produce a smooth outer surface. Or one end is thicker and receives the other edge in a specifically carved reception. But wouldn't this be even more heavy? The only interest I would see in reducing the time used for setting the rivets.

Mh. I've searched a bit via google. Perhaps finally the skinner at MG are right after all. I found an image depicting a reconstruction of a 109G and it doesn't show the rivets and hardly the panel lines.
Please go to "Die neuesten Fotos" (see link list on the left). The scroll down till you see the fotos of April 2011 and then click on the fotos where you have a medium close up of the back fuselage of the 109 G10 http://www.messerschmitt-bf109.de/ Of course with usage and dirt collecting they (the pannel lines) will perhaps get more visible like one can see on some old photographs. I never saw a historic foto with rivets clearly sticking out (they were anyhow sunk in the metal sheets). Very detailled fotos of quite a rugged 109: http://www.clubhyper.com/reference/bf109detailbg_2.htm Here is another museum 109 Last edited by 41Sqn_Stormcrow; 06-04-2011 at 05:25 PM. |
