Yep, that's probably one of the biggest questions of the film, but I can imagine several answers, one being ... we are just too destructive like has been covered in The Day The Earth Stood Still (original version please ) and many other films of the genre, remember that our Human spacecraft in Prometheus were pretty advanced and really starting to go places and we can imagine our technology growing and growing in this films universe, perhaps the creators thought we were getting too big for our boots or were like an experimental virus out of control and had to be exterminated before the warmongering Humans populated more parts of the Universe? They could always go on to create a more peaceful species later ... I dunno.

Could be the Creator at the start was a renegade (terrorist?) Creator who deliberately set out to create a greedy warmongering human species against the wishes of its brothers?

In Sci Fi we can imagine any scenario, that's why its Science Fiction and not Science Fact.

BTW, I'm looking for the name of horror movie produced justa few years back. Story line - Man sacrifices some kids to send a house to hell but one escapes. Later the boy is killed in the house, spell is enacted, house and cast (as you'd know it) descends into .. naughty place .. where keeping a light on is the only protection from being eaten alive by wall-crawling demons. Loved it so much i want to buy the Bluray but ...

Thinking back to Prometheus again, someone mentioned the med scene, that was pretty intense I agree ... also, nobody does a Sci Fi spaceship landing scene the way Ridley does ... just awesome

Unfortunately in Sci Fi any sort of "prequel" is asking for trouble. The idea of cashing in on a pre-existing fan base may seem tempting but you can never meet the expectations of the existing fans.

A good example of this is the series Caprica which, if it had been stand alone, had some really interesting concepts to explore. Unfortunately it was tied in as a prequel to BSG and was totally the wrong sort of series for BSG big action space opera fans, and hence crashed and burned in its first season.

Maybe its something to do with me growing up but while my older brothers still watch only action movies I am looking for a meaning behind the film or at least a very good action film... AVATAR bored the hell out of me.

I'd advise anyone going to see it to forget about Alien/Aliens and imagine this is a separate entity perhaps in a parallel universe.

I agree, lots of people are saying they didn't enjoy it but I think that coming out the cinema thinking and questioning the film is a better experience than being spoon fed all the answers! Also Ridley Scott always seems to give better versions in directors cuts so will look forward to the DVD release to see if there are more differences.

Apparantly there will be two more films along with Prometheus as kind of a prequel trilogy, hope that is true as I really enjoyed the first one!

Ok, I finally managed to watch it, and I still have mixed feelings about it (although it mildly influenced my dreams last night, so at least on a subconscious level I must have enjoyed it!).

I think there needs to be a distinction here between the Alien series fans and the newcomers though: it might all look very cool to people that never saw the Alien series, but for the others I'm sure you might have been left a bit puzzled with all the more or less evident quotes and references from the previous movies.. I mean, were they really necessary? I know they needed to create a series of hints for continuity, but they've done it in a sort of silly way.. I wonder whether it could have been written better (not to mention the weird plot holes here and there).

As a sci-fi film per se it was thoroughly enjoyable, but I was kind of expecting a more refined product. Alien and above all the completely misunderstood Alien 3 still remain my favourites.

To anyone who has yet to see it, go and see it but as a standalone film nothing to do with Alien. It might be more rewarding that way.

This prequel is pretty epic in it's attempt (at least in comparison tt the the "knock off one by one" original Alien)... so much so, that it leaves the alien xenomorph as a relatively unimportant character. As a transpermia film with heavy religous connotations and undertones this film succeeds amazingly well. At it's heart it's about the creation of mankind, and apparent destruction of mankind by the Space Jockeys..... except something goes wrong with the SJ's plans and the xenomorphs kill their 'master.'

Was mankind to be destroyed arbitrarily because the creators can, as suggested by David and Shaw's boyfriend Hallywell's creation theory? Was mankind created because the SJ's could or was the creation of man an extention of the SJs ala God creating man out of an extention of love? Had mankind's cup of indignation been filled and were the Space Jockeys to destroy mankind for their deeds or was killing mankind arbitrary because the SJ's can??

An interview with Ridley suggested that mankind had killed a messenger 2000 years ago. They ommitted the reference to Christ in the movie, but if the idea of a 'divine' messenger was thought to be placed in the movie, I can easily continue the belief that this story is a sci fi/ alien version of the book of apocolypse/Revelation gone wrong. Maybe the destruction that was supposed to occur 2000 years ago was a destruction of mercy - thus saving mankind the dark ages, numerous plagues, world wars, and the threat of our own annialation.

We saw two space ships in the movie. One brought life, the other death. Will the original craft make a reappearance? I could even suppose they were sci fi versions of the throne of god. Revelations and Ezekiel detail two different types of throne rooms. Both movable IIRC.

At the end we're left with two survivors. One who is seeking answers to her faith. The other ... well, I'm not sure about David. LOL I don't think Shaw is on a mission of revenge, but instead seeking answers. She'll probably end up going all Ripley on them, but not immediately. I believe that there will be a beacon that the Nostromo answers, and it either comes from Shaw when she finally meets up with the SJs and the xenomorphs or from David. Remember Ash seems to have at least a cursery understanding that there are life forms, and he's to assure they are brought back to Earth. The planet Prometeus lands on isn't the same planet that the Nostromo lands on.

Despite the uneveness of some of the story, and the non-sensical actions of some of the crew I liked it. There are unanswered questions like the cave pictures and the apparent map for example, but I think they will be explained in the next installment.

The ultimate question in the Ridley Scott story is, where did we come from? We may not like the answers.
