err, there was a complete rewrite of that "buggy code" (engine) though and to all intents and purposes, the il-2 series died with CoD. Future releases will be a 777 variant, an offshoot, a spin off

Carefull guys, the rules here have changed, it only took a year and the death of CoD but somebody figured out criticism is damaging, animals are always more volatile when wounded.

Not sure what your trying to tell me there Wolf.

Of course I know all that.. and the supposed rewrite still didnt fix it enough. After all, most of the promised features were removed or never materialised.

And just to be clear.. the BoS sequel will be on a slightly different version of the ROF engine. What that means at this stage is unknown.

Fact is, that 777, despite making a wonderful ww1 dogfight sim, didn't manage to fill this world with life or even to allow a adequate number of objects and ai in a online game.
A look at the trenches in RoF is disillusioning at best.
So, how can the expectations be high when the primary moneywell of 777 isn't by far as capable as the buggy CloD engine?
Shurely 777 would improve RoF if they were able to do so, but those faults were there from the beginning and weren't mended, despite laments from the users all the years.

I agree that less competition is a loss for consumers, however, think about it... even if 777 encroached on WW2 territory with the merge, there was always going to be a loser.

While many saw CoD dead on arrival, obviously with the proper resources and management I have no doubts IL-2 could have been stable, but from the sounds of its development history, it was just too riddled with strife from the beginning.
Where some succeed, and other fail, ultimately, they fail together and I in my opinion this is what happened to CoD.
And it's not the first time in the history of business and games or anything for that matter that a project has failed and investment wasted. So even though we have been given a bit of insight into the tragic failings of CoD's development, why are so many surprised?

I certainly know (as they basically stated it) that BoS won't be at the quality of CoD, and they IL-2 series will be changed forever but sometimes change is what is needed. The world revolves around money, and at the end of the day they need to survive as a company. Imagine how ruined IL-2 truly would be if the studio went 100% bust! (Not to say they didn't )
I certainly don't believe that MG are being selfish here. Selfish, would be to abandon the brand altogether and leave us with nothing.

It may be hard to hear this, but compromises on the level of realism are required to make a simulator commercially viable these days. (unless you go the DCS route?? and who wants to wait 18months to 2 years for each aircraft?)

Unfortunately the community found this out the hard way with CLOD and have been teased by what could have been. But thats the point.. it's very much a "could have been", because even CLOD was not even close to the original promises Oleg made. Graphically it looked good in some aspects, phenomenal in the cockpit and the external aircraft models, but the lighting and landscape never matched the quality of the aircraft. The sounds were ordinary, the damage model was significantly dumbed down from the original release as were the texture qualities all dialed down. There are numerous other problems that have been discussed to death, the bottom line... CLOD spent a year going backwards just to get to a half playable state.

So the facts now are that we have to lower our expectations and thats going to be hard for sure... BUT...

I think even though CLOD promised so much, it lost it's soul from the original IL2. At this point there is no other option but to put the faith into 1c/777 restoring the soul of the IL2 series. For me that means I can live without a lot of what we saw and were promised in CLOD.

I will be happy to see a thriving community with 600 players online with a 1946 IL2 style play brought forward to 2014 with better graphics, landscapes, DM, FM, AI and online MP/Co-op. And I think thats just exactly what 1C/777 will set out to do.

I can live without dynamic weather, animated pilots, cockpit details down to the last scratched rivet, clickable cockpits, blueprint constructed models and damage models.... Just to have the original soul of IL2... which was at the end of it fun.. and despite the 400 hours or so ive spent in CLOD, It doesnt come close to the thousands of hours I spend in IL2 and It had never once given me the same feeling I had playing IL2... and that my friends is why although its sad to let go of the promise of CLOD and BoM... Im all for the rebirth of IL2 with 1C/777. 777 have proven they can make a commercial success with a very appealing graphics and game engine... no its not CloD but I think its for the better for it!

Cheers
Phat!

We've had original IL2 for 10 years, it offers all of that and most of us own it, the content is vast and free, it has the co-op mode everybody is crazy about and it's a DX9 engine, your toughest choice is which mod pack you affiliate with so you can hate everybody else.

At least they didn't go the Microsoft Flight 'Simulator' route, but I digress.

Sums up exactly how i feel Phat.

Now "IF" the IMO the dream of modders getting hold of the COD code and managed to magically fix COD's problems (i very much dont think it could happen) that would be great news and i would play that also.

Yes agreed and I still spend 3x more time in 46 than I do in CloD for that reason. The only things that currently peeve me with 46 are the splintering of the community between HSFX and UP (lets face it almost nobody I know flies stock these days!) AND some of the changes to flight models I dont agree with.
Other than that and the flat landscapes (even with texture mods) and 90's cockpit graphics I still think its a wonderful game to play. And that was my point, if 777 can take most of what was good with 46 and bring it upto date with some shinier graphics and more sophisticated FM/DM then Ill be VERY happy. The content will obviously have to come over time, but at the end of the day I prefer to fly only 3-4 different aircraft anyway so the 10 they say they will have on release of BoS will be enough for me.
