Makes more sense from a business standpoint. Look at all the PC games now that are MMO style. Seriously, take a quick glance at Steam.
.
Of the top 30 best selling games on steam, 0 are MMOs.

Edit: What I mean is there is a huge customer base for people to buy non-MMO games. A lot of people who play free to play don't pay either. With 2 ww2 sims already out, it makes more sense to buck the trend and cater to those who will also play single player by keeping to the tested format.

I hear you....but what decision lately makes you think these guys "make sense and cater to those who will also play single player"?

The great offline campaign? The great missions? The awesome Quick Mission Builder? See what I mean?

From the OP link:

"The game will enter alpha development in 2013 as long as it can pass a 'proof of concept' milestone before the end of the year"

Let's hope it fails then!

Yeah - the netcode 'import it from another game' magic fix seems like laughable BS.

'Royal Quest' - should be a cinch to port the code over for a flightsim then.

I don't know if IL-2 MMO will be reality, but it is 2012, not 2005... mostly MMO are changed to free-to-play (pay-to-win) model becouse the monthly fee is not more attractive for players (some time ago there was a good article in gamespot relative to the new buissness model for mmo), a solution that (IMHO) is not good for simulator.
