Now they are soon releasing Combat Mission : Battle for Normandy and the engine that was initially as buggy as CloD is now really doing what it should. Naturally the engine is nowhere looking like the multi million budget 3D engines, but their community understand why and focus on the gameplay.

That is the trip is hope for regarding CloD, the team survives and release 2-3 addons to the initial title to stay alive (just like they did with CM:SF). Then they do a new standalone title with the engine that is mature by then, getting good reviews etc and they finally earn some money!

To make that happen takes a community that realize that comparisons to the block buster titles with almost unlimited budgets is just silly!
Not just down to the community though - proper communication from the devs to the community is important to foster such a response as you describe. I don't think that has happened here, especially pre-launch, and that tends to leave a bad, unforgiving taste in the mouth. Unwise to use up all your favours at once under these circumstances!

... But 'CloD' just sounds ugly, so to speak.

Setting aside tastes in gaming (I enjoy both genres):
COD = latest gen graphics game that you can play today
CloD = last gen graphics game that you might be able to play in 2013

Just call it CliD.

Just make sure you pronounce it with a soft(!) "D".

I think it's safe to assume that most mentions of COD on a dedicated Cliffs of Dover forum will more than likely be about Cliffs of Dover.
