Landmarks (the bays and promontories of the coastline in particular). This is easy if you start on a coastal airfield but learning navigation helps if starting inland. Not compulsory though - just head in roughly the right direction until you spot the coast and then pick out some landmarks.

Welcome to IL2COD bug # 890,001! This is a known issue that hopefully is caused by some sort of graphical bug. But the easiest way to avoid them is knowing how to know they're ghosts long before you get there. The easiest way to do this is to fly straight at them (especially if you see a formation of them). If you don't see the dots changing altitude (as you'd see a group of humans in formations) but instead they are stuck in one spot.

The other way is to pay attention to the radar contacts. They never call out the ghosts.

Only way is to open the map (you can zoom all the way in on it) and use it to spot landmarks and where you are. It doesn't take long to get navigation down though. There is a learning curve, just like anything, but after a while you'll wonder why you ever flew with icons on, at least IMO.

Bounder -

With icons/minimap stuff turned off, you have to find your location by Dead reconing. Over the channel is difficult, but the more alt you get the easier it is to make out the features of the coastline, same goes for being over land. You just have to pull up the map, zoom in and start finding reference points. Once you have flown on a specific portion of a map a few times you get to know the area.

Thanks very much for the replies chaps - I figured following the coast line and trying to spot landmarks was probably the way to do it but thought I'd ask just in case as I'm a noob... just been learning how to set the compass and directional indicator too. Hopefully get online soon.

Cheers
