This was back in the days when there was honor in being a warrior...they proudly wore uniforms, and they didn't hide in ambush inside a mosque, or behind women and children, nor did they use mentally retarded women as suicide bombers to target and kill innocent civilians...how times have changed......

That happened to Bob Johnson. In addition to seeing it on "Dogfights", you can read about it in his biography: Thunderbolt.

That story about the B-17 is a really good one. Thanks for posting it.

Thanks for sharing that. It's amazing to me how much respect enemy soldiers can have for one another, even during war. I would love to see a video of the first time the two pilots met. Even though I'd probably be crying like a school girl.

Orders are orders, but you still have to be able to look at yourself in the mirror when it's all over.

It's even more impressive when you consider that it was a bomber, which was most likely bombing some German city. So in a way, his country was being attacked, and yet he didn't want to shoot down the bomber.

Just goes to show that the people of the nations in Europe shouldn't have been fighting at all, as they shared a set of values and standards. But that's what happens when a country lets extremists take over.

I agree with everyone that has posted here; thanks for sharing such a great story. I'm happy to see the two pilots were able to reunite before they saw the end of their days.

Yes when Socialism slowly crept over Germany, it happend with so many promises of good things. History teaches it and yet people just never learn. I hate say this but in one form or another it will happen again.

When things sound to good to be true and the government wants to run or as they make it sound "help " you with your everyday life, its time to keep your eyes open. Lots of german people just kept turning a blind eye to what was going on because everything sounded so good. The National Socialist party made them completly dependent so that they could control the population. Most people were to scared to loose what the government was giving them.

I have a heart full of respect for the Germans that stood up against Socialism and put their beliefs first. Lots of them were killed by the SS. I feel they are some true Heroes.

These men really did have such honor. To be able to do something like this, and use better judgement over command... and to never tell a soul that what you had done to protect those men and himself.
Truly a great story.

That was Robert S Johnson, the story is told in full in his book "Thunderbolt".

After looking at that picture I've just realized something. The spiral nose cone on the 109. After watching recent trailers I've noticed few of the 109s depicted had a similar nose cone design but they seem to just be painted on circles, not swirls like in the picture and here:

Was it particularly difficult to animate this certain feature Anton? Just curious, Thanks.
