DX10 vs DX9 Differences?
Does anyone see any difference between DX9 and DX10 modes? That would be ShaderModel 3/4. I currently have it set to 3.0, it gives me 5 fps more. Also set shadows to medium, 10 fps increase. Medium shadows result in hard edged shadows, not the soft ones.
Playing at 1680x1050 with everything on max except shadows and currently alternating between SM 3 & SM 4. My Specs: C2D E8400 @ 4.2 GHz 8800 GT 750/2000/1900 4 GB OCZ 1066 MHz eVGA 750i FTW |

SM4 enables a lot of lighting/shading features/procedures and PhysX. Without SM4 PhysX is disabled in this game. If you want it to look better run SM4 basically. I can spot a huge difference in visuals, and performance, between Shader Model 3 and 4.

Hmm... PhysX works in SM 3 as well. The game doesn't really have anything that intensive in terms of what PhysX supports. Honestly I can't see a difference between SM3 and SM4. Could you post a screenshot where you can find any differences between these two modes? Thanks

Well I have since uninstalled the game to wait for the North American release. Wait until April 20th and then download the patch. You will see a HUGE difference in the shader model versions... trust me.

@NFSFAN - it prolly doesnt matter cause regardless if you set SM 4.0 or 3.0.
in the init.cfg it will remain r.shadermodel 3 even if you set it to 4.0 in game. @JuggernautOfWar - It was released in NA on 4/15/2009 and if it wasnt... i got my copy 5 days early then . I also disagree with what you said about seeing a huge difference. You wont. I have played on both 4.0 and 3.0 but no matter which i pick it stays r.shadermodel 3 in the init.cfg like i mentioned above. http://www.direct2drive.com/2/7935/p...tasis-Download http://www.vgreleases.com/PC/ReleaseDate-154570.aspx Last edited by serinity; 04-17-2009 at 01:20 AM. |

Yeah, I agree with serinity. However, there was a scene I think level 3 or so, where you have a torch sitting besides a pool of water. It is where you first get the secondary weapon, the valve. If you switch ShaderModel from 3 to 4 there, you will see a slight difference in how the lightning is being rendered. Although for me this doesn't justify the 5-7 fps drop that I get. With SM3 everything maxed out except shadows on medium, I can easily pull acceptable fps, with 25 fps being lowest I'd see.

Are you guys SURE SM3 FULLY enables PhysX in this game? As in the real-time water physics and such. With the North American release a patch is coming out to address the problem of there not being much PhysX in the game. Read my post for more info.
It's still now officially out in the US. The official publishing site still says "Coming Soon" and there is no PhysX patch yet. Last edited by JuggernautOfWar; 04-17-2009 at 09:56 AM. |
