Game sticking on auto-pilot

posted about this elsewhere on site but now realise its not the joystick: when I play for about 2 minutes I can utilise any controls on k/board and stick, but then a weird thing happens the game goes automatically to auto-pilot and no amount of key bashing, joystick buttons, will move it back into user control

I vaguely remember someone else posting about this issue but can't find it.
