Treasure map: Am I using it right?

After killing a pirate I collected a treasure map. I took the map and some probes to the planet, which was not previously explored. I set out the probes and "clicked" the map in the "activate" slot while still on the planet. I left and came back when the search was completed and found more or less the usual collection of stuff. Nothing special.

Am I doing it right?

You did everything right, it's possible that other rangers picked the object from that planet...the can do it even before you get the map and this will not affect the map list iirc

If I do find a "treasure" what does it look like? Any different from the normal collection of stuff you find on a planet?

P.S. Oh! I see now. There's a little (i) that names the items the treasure map helped find. It wasn't a lot but it was something.
