Campaign as British Pilot

Have wandered through the campaign or story line of the British pilot in COD. I say "wandered" because I repeated missions a number of times because of its erratic way of saving completed missions. Anyway...last night, after completing a mission successfully, I thought, because I was not shot down and, in fact landed okay...when I exited the mission, all the screen said was something about feeling the flames or burning up or something. It appeared to be the last mission of that campaign as my only option at that point was to start a new campaign. It seemed to imply that this pilot was killed in a flaming end. Is this the way that segment of COD is supposed to play out?
