IIRC, the Defiant's didn't do so badly in their first few combats when they were attacked from astern. They only started to suffer serious losses when the LW responded by using attacks from ahead or beneath where they were hopeless.

To may knowledge, the "day of glory" of the Daffy over Dunkirk was mosstly due to overclaiming and not running into too many fighters.

I would really like to see a clip of the Daffy in it's intended role as a bomber formation destroyer.
