With good reflexes it's possible, need to try and reload quite a few times though to get the timing right. Good luck

Here's the tactic

Save. Run up to the enemy army in an approximately 90 degree direction if possible. If not, tighten the angle of approach. Keep your finger on the space bar. As soon as you hear the enemy taunt, hit it. With any luck, you should be able to pause the game while the enemy is a small distance away from you. Now quicksave while the game is paused. Prepare to move a small distance away in the direction the enemy can easily move (because if it hits a barrier of some sort, it will stop). Hit space and move a little while observing the enemy. If you get caught or the enemy stops, reload. If it follows, hit quickly the space again and autosave.

Rinse and repeat till the enemy clears the map site, and be aware that some enemies do not move, and some maps cannot be obtained by kiting due to tight spots for kiting.

There's one map guard in Verona that would not budge. I had to get really crazy close to get him to activate at all, bouncing back a tiny notch he moves like a millimeter, gets ??? then stays still or heads back the millimeter he moved. Tried for a while but totally impossible.

Others were real ez. Traveling the coast on Montero there's a shore and elevator that leads to a tiny hill top which often has a map and guard. That guard has a much smaller activation radius compared to units guarding ordinary items, but larger than the impossible guy on Verona. Have to get real close to activate him and once he moves have to stay real close to keep him following. There's enough room up there to run behind him grab it and slip back by before he catches you. Lucky he was a slow Thorn. So it seems map guards have different degrees of difficulty.

Looting maps and tricking guards etc. is one of my favorite aspects of the game.
