I read a book with the almost an identical plot from the 60's. I cant remember the name but it was about a spitfire pilot who went missing in action over the channel in '41.

Subsequently, when his former squadron was under heavy attack and heavily outnumbered, an extra plane would appear out of the sun attacking the germans and shooting them down with ease. None of the squadron could identify the planes pilot as it had no markings (other than roundrils). No german pilots could get close enough to shoot it, and it always managed to evade any attacks on it. As soon as the battle was in the RAF's favour the plane would dissapear in to the coulds and not be seen again.

The story then takes off (pardon the pun) with the "quest" of one pilot to discover if the plane was his old squadron buddy, and what really happened to him on his fateful flight.
