Default Reconnoiter waypoint?

I know what reconnoiter means, but has anyone figured out what the reconnoiter waypoint does in-game. There's nothing in the game manua baout this waypoint type.

Maybe as the term means, the waypoint and area around it is surveyed for information.

For example, if the waypoint is on an enemy base, objects and items belonging to the enemy is made available by location to your side "ie they show up on a map"
