Default Still love CLOD - but I reinstalled BOB2 to get the strategic layer

Love CLOD for the promise it holds, even with all it's faults. I even upgraded my rig for this game which did make a big difference and the latest JG51 semi-dynamic campaign gives me a reason to play but I found that I was missing the strategic aspect of BOB and reinstalled Rowan's excellent BOB2 game.

Of course, the fact that I just finished Len Deighton's Fighter and started Stephen Bungay's - The most dangerous enemy doesn't help since they give such a wide and sweeping picture of the battle that CLOD just doesn't cover.

Anyone else found that they still shuttle between multiple games to get their BOB fix?

Never got on with BoB2, as I thought the interface was too clunky after il2.
If course, now I'm flying CoD I find the interface too clunky, so maybe I should give BoB2 another go...

I do the same. BoB2 might not have the most recent graphics but historical detail is there, big formations and a very impressive AI. A big air battle is raging on all around you. It's still supported by dedicated modders and the most recent patches bring lots of new ground objects.

It's a fine long time community project, just not as flashy and beautiful.

Default BOB2 patched up to .11 is very good

Just flew an instant action mission yesterday and it's graphics and FM are ancient compared to CLOD but if you can get past that, there are hours of fun to be had trying to play Luftwaffe commander, trying to figure out the raids for the day and figuring out how to make sure your Stukas don't get massacred (return escort).

CLOD has lots of depth in the aircraft (FM, DM) and BOB2 has a lot of depth in strategic gameplay.

Excelent game, with good strategic campaigns and the best flight models. AI is also very good. A superb work had done there the team BDG.

The problem is all the sliders that are available for configuring the AI (gunnery, smarts, aggressiveness, ability, awareness, etc, etc, etc,) are only available for customization in the FMB. If they had all those features in the GUI for the average user, people would be praising the AI.

As for some of the super human moves, especially the quick rolling, I accidentally found out how to do this in my own 109 Full rudder, yank up for split second, then diagonally rightward down, and you'll be in a slight cork screw turn that's rolling faster than a D9. Opposite rudder and up for a split second stops it. Very fun to use in combat, but very hard to make happen consistently unlike the robots.
If this quote is true then it is really sad and the developers must have set the default skill levels to "Novice" as I have not been shot down as yet by a COD AI except by a Bomber gunner and friendly fire. They are not aggressive, will not always engage , and the AI shoot poorly, IMHO I do not want to fiddle with the FMB every time I want to change a starting parameter like skill level. I want to be able to change options in single player quick missions.

I think that COD should want to implement a way to change parameters in the single player quick mission options or at least offer missions with higher skill level defaults.

Anyway, I hope COD development will give this request some serios consideration for us off-line dogfighting players.

the problem is, that the ai doesnt really react different if you move those sliders in the fmb.
even if you make them aces and push all sliders to the right, they will disengage after some seconds and then heading home, completely ignoring that you are on their six.
thats the most annoying thing about the ai in my opinion.if you set up a mission in the fmb, the first 1-2minutes can be fun, but then it gets really quickly completely boring.
in my view cod's ai is far from good.
