Default High explosive anti tank

well, i always use HE in IS3 to anti king tiger in a safe distance when i cant flank it or i need to distract it, and it does destroy KING tiger about 6-10 shots of HE. but i dont understand how HE caliber and tank armor determine hull destroy and those damages. i used point blank range 122 on the side Wirbelwind and didnt even destroy its turret but just tracks. so how does HE destroy tanks, like where do i shot? does the more shot on the same area will increase the chance of destroying it? does higher velocity help in Anti tank for HE?

HE explodes on touch in real life HE cant do much dmg maybe can shake a tank brake someones arm because of explosion.AP just penetrates the armor and kills it crew or disables some of the equipment like shell storage.APCR is mix of HE and AP shell it penetrates armor and explodes inside of tank and kills it crews.

It depends on the round used. The 152 Shorty of the KV-2 in real life could literally knock the turret off of a Tiger I. The reason you damage tracks and turrets and not hull destroy is because it destroys the turret ring and the track wheels. The reason it eventually kills the Tiger II is because it slowly(at least by Men of War standards) destroys the armor.

That is not correct. APCR contains no explosive charge and has no fuse. It relies on its kinetic energy, just like a AP bullet from a rifle. If your Target explodes after being shot with APCR, you´ve simply hit the jackpot (ammo or fuel storage)

@Topic
I would never engage Tanks with HE Ammunition, except we are atalking about lightly armored Tanks/Vehicles and our caliber/cannon is powerful enough (Tiger, Panther, IS3...). Use AP and APCR, especially at long ranges.

Based on things I've read, Panzersprenggranate speaks the truth, but also it's probably worthy of note that there is such thing as HEAT (high explosive anti tank) and that it is present in MoW as Bazookas, PIAT, etc. Tactics for these basically recommends shooting at as close to a 90 degree angle as possible. So that's basically what I'd do in your case as well with the 122mm, just shoot whatever part of the KT that will be the least armour and the best angle

You are talking about APCBC shells. APCR ammo was made with an tungsten core or from tungsten. Please read some history before you post.

thats correct, APCR was also called "silver bullet" it was basicly a higher quality(and more expesive to make) AP round, specially later during war those was pretty limited so a tank would carry just a few of those (and in the end german tanks would usually carry non due to lack of resources)

btw reason why HE rounds sometimes can be effective agains enemy heavy tanks is that the energy from the explosion ofteen rips and shake things loose,(like tracks) while say a low caliber/velosity AP round have no/little chance to penetrate , atleast you can do some minor damage using HE. a ap rounds which is basicly like a flying bolt either penetrates (and thuse deliver minimum kinetic energy) or bounce off(not really a lot of energy deliver either)

While IS3 does have a high velosity gun, keep in mind that I think most of the SU carrys a low velosity(howitzer) which might not work as effective again armour.
