game doesnt start after patch-disable automatic update in steam?

after i tried now several times to install the beta patch,the game doesnt start anymore.so i depatched it again to the previous version.
as the final patch is supposed to come tomorrow, i wonder if that issue will be fixed by then.if not, i would be really pissed if i could not play the game anymore.
so should i disable the automatic update function in steam??
any guesses?
