Default Question About Flaps

Hi fellas, just got back into this game and Ive made the big leap up to Sim.
Can anyone tell me what the differences between the settings of the flaps?
Raised , Combat & Pulsed (this one im not too sure about cos Ive noticed alot of planes have only the first two)

Any help would be much appreciated

i havent seen the "pulsed" before. are you playing consul or PC? in sim the combat flaps are pretty necessary in turns especially with certain planes to keep you from spinning out. flaps give you more lift and more drag. if i am diving away i will raise them form max speed. play around with them and see what fits you. some guys leave the flaps on all the time.

Ok buddy here goes; raising you flaps makes you more aerodynamic so you move through the air faster. Although speed is good it sucks in turns. The reason is that a slower plane can turn tighter then a faster one because the faster plane has to fight inertia. A plane tends to slow down in turns and well then stall and crash into the ground. What helps a plane stay in the air during tight turns is your combat flaps. Once you’re out of a tight turn or you down the other guy just raise your flaps it will help you gain speed and save your engine some trouble for the next fight. Well hope this helps buddy.

In real and in simpe words it works like this: An aircraft's lift capabilities can be measured from the following formula:

L = (1/2) d v^2 s CL


where:

* L = Lift, which must equal the airplane's weight in pounds

* d = density of the air. This will change due to altitude. These values can be found in a I.C.A.O. Standard Atmosphere Table.

* v = velocity of an aircraft expressed in feet per second

* s = the wing area of an aircraft in square feet

* CL = Coefficient of lift , which is determined by the type of airfoil and angle of attack.


That's mean that you can obtain the same lift factor by lowering speed and increasing wings area.

Lowering the FLAPS, is like increasing wing area ( s in the formula ), lowering your stall speed but also increasing aerodynamic drag.
