Curious, what kind of materials do you make it from?

It almost looks like foam board.

I have a very nice posh high back chair, with soft leather, soft covered arms and the back leans back when I push.

Looking at pit with those pads (for a chair), and having to climb down and into and push out... I go to the gym to workout

Honestly, I do think the idea is good, and if that helps get you into a more immersive feeling about flight simming or air combat it looks like a nice inexpensive alternative to building a more serious sim cockpit.

LOL, I was flying almost every night on ZvW at the time I built it, the colors are more of a joke to myself that anything. As for materials, it's fairly cheap 1/2" plywood, I doubt foamboard would hold my 200+ pound a$$ up! Also, it's not so hard to get in and out of, it helps that I raised the whole thing up about 4" from the plans.

One big thing is that since these pics were taken I added a floor, so that my pedals are anchored in place now. All of this means that everything is in the same place everytime I climb in. Even if I break it all down and put it back up, it's the same every time and it stays there! And It's comfy as hell. I spent the extra money on some good high density foam and enlisted Mrs BadAim for the cover, I'm sitting in it now and quite content.

I carefully built a good LED head tracker pointer that sits securely ontop of my headset. It works great, and even works in bright sunlight.

I prefer not to sit in a blacked out room.

I used IR LEDs in the head tracker pointer so the light is invisible to the human eye, but the webcamera sees it extremely well.

At this point, I'm better pleased with the free-track than TrackIR. My Opinion of course.

Akers-Barnes pits are great and versatile for the sim enthusiast whether flying or driving. Because it's his workstation as well, I doubt that would be the best solution though. I would suggest looking at the sim/pit builder's threads at SimHQ and CH-Hangar for other ideas that may be more versatile.

I have and use an AB pit as well and love it, but I'm fortunate in that I don't have to do much double-duty on my gaming/sim rig.

I'm a middle-aged guy, who plays video games with other middleaged guys while sitting in a plywood contraption that he made in the garage. I can take a joke. Now the soapbox derby thing sounds like fun. Hmmmmmm, I wonder how much plywood I have left?

As to the TIR thing, yes I use it, That's the little black thing on top of the monitor. The TIR4 is way better than the earlier versions, and much less sensitive to light, though the midday sun through the south facing window behind me will still cause a little trouble. I'm certainly not opposed to using a webcam though, and may look into it if my TIR fails.

I think you're in a good place. All you need is a couple axles with some good quality wheels, a turning plate for the front and you got a dual purpose contraption. Those zero markings might even stimulate some competition in the derby.

I'm just joking of course, and I'm glad to hear you can take a joke.

It's really wonderful that all of us (humans) are so different and think in so many ways about things. It sure would be a boring world without the diversity. LOL
