Noob question: Autocombat?

I really like the game so far, i've been looking forward to it since last year and it's very nicely done. I have a generic question. When in a battle sometimes my units auto move, attack or just set themselves to defend when their turn comes up. It seems like the Autocombat toggle in the lower left switches between on and off regardless.

Is there a limit to the amount of units you can control per turn? Any tips are appreciated. I would like to control all my units actions for every turn. Maybe i need more PT. Thanks!
