Sorry to hear the same.... I've seen a few threads also where XP SP3 players have issues ..... I really hope this is not a signal for the future .....

I do plan an upgrade to Win 7 and generally a better PC but frankly, what I have at the moment is pretty capable.

Being unable to take advantage of the patches has been a real disappointment and I'm all out of ideas here apart from the belief that there is some dependency between the patches and my system that is misbehaving. Just no idea what that/they may be!

Anyone reading this who knows any tips would be welcome to respond.

All pointers direct towards an problem with updating my Official steam version of 1.05.xxx to any of the later patches / RC releases.

I personally am confident my HW is good because I have testing it well and have no other problems with other games [or indeed the official Steam version] to support suspecting my HW.

The failure for me is always the same. All appears normal, the splash screen notes the version of the game as expected post patching process and I can select from the menu and start a SP mission. I clear caches, rebooted sometimes to make sure that's not an issue, set resolution to very low etc.

During the mission load, the progress bar reaches ~90-95% and then a windows OS popup presents telling me the launcher failed!

I had to actually buy a copy also. Its quite a sting at £125... Worse thing was I already had a keycode but it was OEM and all I needed was a disk...

I was lucky Farber, I grabbed a couple of retail versions at the pre order price, think it cost me £90 for both!

I'm also a Win XP SP3 user and affected by this issue. But I don't see why I should upgrade to Win 7 on the off chance CLOD might start working. If they've patched the game so it's no longer compatible with Win XP then they should do one of three things

1. Fix the patch so it is compatible with XP again.
2. Make the previous version available as an option to XP users.
3. Compensate XP customers who bought CLOD in good faith expecting the game to remain usable on XP.

I paid good money for this game and I don't see why I should be forced to pay a lot more cash for an OS update to continue running it, not to mention all the disruption an OS update would cause to other games and software I run.

Upgrading to Win 7 is not a good solution.

Same issue here ... no way am I going from my XP64 to 7 ... my wife has 7 and the difference is huge ... I have 19 processes running on boot up, she has 50+ .... I would like to know how to run an earlier version of CoD through steam? .. I don't play onlne, I just want to be able to play it again! .. payed $50, then new game content through steam, now launcher encounters a problem right after the thermastat loads up a mission! ... I wanna revert back to the 1.05 version please? - Thanks! - Darrin

One clarification question might be, Is there any XP user [32 or 64bit] would IS able to run the last patched version? I've not heard positive confirmation of 'Yes, my XP box runs the latest patch with no problems' and also, we seem to be fewer in number overall complaining about this.

My thinking includes;

a) that players use Win7 OS now anyway
b) many past players have left Il2 COD for dead due to past disappointment
c) most previous XP users have migrated to Win7 in order to play!
d) we represent a dwindling minority

darrincates, your OS is XP64bit right? ,,,,,,and also the issue?
Wow! 'cos that blasts a hole in my thinking that this was more a 32bit Vs 64bit issue .....
It sucks.

Kevin, darrin, I share the frustration. I feel cheated but I fear nothing is going to change. Defeatist? Maybe. Realistic? I think!

For me personally, I've decided to build a win7 OS rig anyway. The XP rig will live on for other uses.

Good luck with your decisions fellas.
