As far as I've gathered it can't be done since the weathering will always be on top of the skin. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

P.S There are games out there today with object textures light-years ahead of CloD's and they run fine on even lesser hardware.
I'm not a game developer either, but I know optimizations take different forms, some lower textures, and others optimize the texture code. I'm sure there are finished highly optimized games out there that have decent textures that run on lesser hardware, but that doesn't mean much, as there are so many other variables.

P.S. Its possible its a bug the developers might not be aware of, or a way to save resources, by masking the higher textures with less detailed weathering, either way it doesn't hurt to remind them. I can see them leaving the slider in until the feature is improved. Its just more work removing the slider, that wouldn't have much of a priority. Overall its a complex, difficult, resource juggling act they are going thru.

Im pretty sure they have turned down the texture quality to. Now, in black death for example, the surfaces on ac`s look terrible up close even at max settings.

Example with everything set to max with original texture:

Completely flat surfaces, not even close to the Spit pic and it doesnt even have AA witch my examples have.

The first and third pics look especially gruesome. Almost looks like if they v cut back on the poly count to.

Or there is something seriously wrong with my graphics card or driver, or both. Im starting to think thats the case cuz the trees on the second pic look od and pretty ugly to me. Anyone else got the same look?

I restate my earlier point but this time with more sensitivity.

Why can't WE that choose to buy high end machines get pre-1.05 graphics back as an option. I maintain that the graphics quality was stripped down to satisfy those very vocal folks who couldn't run max settings on their 5-10 year old machines. Now everyone gets psuedo max settings that are equivalent to the old medium or low.

B6 or someone: Can the beauty of the old COD be reinstated as machines catch up? Maybe, put a new option for "original" (oh we used that already) how about "really original" on the vid panel?
I think when the 512 mbw 680s and 700 series get on the market we can have the best of both worlds.

The way you state this, I get the impression the fps improvement is not entirely due to the coders improving the grafics engine but to the modellers and artists dumbing down the models and textures.

Bit of both I think..

OP- those pix do look good. Forget how nice it looked so hopefully this is all done for a reason and will be back in soon..be nice to have an explanation on it but I wouldn't hold your breath as I'm sure they got bigger fish to fry

I kinda agree, optimizing code is not the same as gimping software. You take resources from one place and put it in another to improve it. You remove unnecessary lines of code, you make the code more efficient. CloD isn't that graphically advanced, sorry but it just isn't, the trees are killing it, the particle effects (which are not in any way state of the art) are killing it and it's all because they are unable to code the game engine properly for reasons that we will never know because luthier has lost the ability to communicate with anything other than a computer. Sorry but it's "little" things like these that makes me not wanna play CloD, gimp this! gimp that! "here you go! we turned CloD in to a tic-tac-toe game!"

Every time you visit this forum I get constantly reminded of something that could've been so great but merely turned out to be a tech demo....from 2006!
