I am using MS Security Essentials as well, never a problem. Very non-intrusive and free.

+1 for MS Security Essentials...I use it with no problems and no conflicts.

I had avast flag this Steam file as malware (vstdlib_s.dll) after a av update. Reported it to both Steam and Avast and the next day after a Steam system and Avast update all is good.
