I mainly view from the ground but occasionally fly a friend's Cessna.
It is often very hazy in south east England. I would say it is the norm for fine weather.
I've flown when you don't spot another 'plane until it's about the size of half your thumb on an outstretched arm.
The only exception is when a cold front has just passed, but in summer the Azores high pressure usually keeps them away.

EDIT - of course outside summer there would be many coal fires, hence the famous London smogs
