So, it looks like the windows were painted black for a few years.

BTW. I asked my mother a while ago (she lived through the Blitz in Birmingham). She said the blackout was at all times, not just during air raids. Everyone had to either turn light off, make linings for curtains so they would totally keep out the lights, or be in a room that had no windows. Always.
